Ebonyi State Police are currently interrogating the vice-chairman of Ikwo Local Government Area, Mr. Sunday Ogba, who was arrested on Monday for allegedly masterminding the robbery and rape of one Mrs. Margret Elom and her two daughters.
Speaking on the arrest in Abakaliki, the State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Sylvester Igbo, said the arrest of the vice-chairman was as a result of the confessional statement made by one of the suspects, Sunday Nwaokponku, who was arrested for allegedly being involved in the act.
According to him, Mrs. Margaret Elom was robbed of the sum of fifty thousand naira, one motorcycle and other valuables by Sunday and his gang adding that Mrs. Elom’s daughters were raped by the hoodlums at gunpoint.
Igbo said that the command arrested one of the suspects, who during interrogation confessed that he and other members of the gang, now at-large, were acting on the vice-chairman’s instructions.
Ogba, the suspect said, had ordered them to retrieve the motorcycle and the certificate of return given to the woman during the recent ward elections of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) in the state.
“As a result of the statement the suspect made, police went in search of the man, who was identified as Hon. Ogba Sunday, the vice-chairman of Ikwo local Government Area. We arrested him and he made a statement to the police that it was a frame-up and it is politically motivated,” Igbo said.
“We are still investigating his defenses to know which one is true and after the investigation, if we found out that the vice-chairman was not involved we will set him free. But if it is true, police will take him to court,” he said.
