PRESIDENCY SLAMS CHIEF OF DEFENCE STAFF OVER COMMENT ON KIDNAPPED SCHOOL GIRLS.

The United States said, yesterday, that it does not have information to support the claim by the Nigerian military that it knows the whereabouts of the more than 200 kidnapped schoolgirls.

The Chief of Defence Staff, Air Marshall Alex Badeh said on Monday that the military knew the location of the schoolgirls, abducted by the Boko Haram Islamic sect on April 14.

Badeh’s claim has also reportedly incurred the wrath of the Presidency.

U.S. State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki told reporters, yesterday, that, “we don’t have independent information from the United States to support that statement. We, as a matter of policy and for the girls’ safety and wellbeing, would not discuss publicly this sort of information regardless.”

Five U.S. and European security officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said they had no credible information on the location of the girls and were skeptical that the Nigerian government knew where they were. The five officials said the United States and some European allies had provided technical intelligence, including information from spy aircraft and satellites, to Nigerian authorities, who lack such intelligence capabilities.

But the officials said that as far as they knew, technical intelligence systems had not produced precise or credible information establishing the girls’ location.

The five officials said that if the Nigerians had obtained such information from informants on the ground, it has not been shared with U.S. and allied agencies.

One impediment to finding the girls, the officials said, was that since their abduction, they had been divided into small groups. Boko Haram is also believed to be hiding them in densely forested terrain where it would be hard for modern technical intelligence systems to gather information.

Presidency angry with CDS
Meanwhile, Chief of Defence Staff, CDS, Air Marshal Alex Badeh, has reportedly incurred the wrath of the Presidency over his claim that the military has sighted the 270 schoolgirls seized from their dormitories in Chibok, Borno State by Boko Haram terrorists last month.

President Jonathan, it was learnt last night, was unhappy with the claim by the defence chief, which he considered as a breach of military tactics capable of hindering the move to free the children, who have been in the kidnappers’ den since last month.

Meanwhile, Air Marshal Badeh declared, yesterday, that the military was now fighting a bigger battle with the international terrorist organisation known as Al Qaeda with networks in North and West Africa, noting that the ongoing counter terrorism and counter insurgency war has gone beyond Boko Haram.

A top Presidency said last night that Jonathan considered the CDS’ claim on the missing schoolgirls as an unnecessary outburst, which could frustrate ongoing efforts by the multinational team currently in the country to rescue the girls.

Counter-productive
The source, which did not want to be quoted, said President Jonathan was still at a loss as to why Badeh made the statement at a time he was expected to be more cautious over the contentious issue, which is generating interest across the globe.

“Indeed the President is really upset over the claim and we do not know what will happen,” the source said but did not give further details.

APPLE PURCHASES BEATS MUSIC AND ELECTRONICS FOR $3BN

Apple is striking a new chord with a $3 billion acquisition of Beats Electronics, a headphone and music streaming specialist that also brings the swagger of rapper Dr. Dre and recording impresario Jimmy Iovine.

Wednesday’s announcement comes nearly three weeks after deal negotiations were leaked to the media. It’s by far the most expensive acquisition in Apple’s 38-year history, a price that the company is paying to counter a threat posed to its iTunes store.

The price consists of $2.6 billion in cash and $400 million in Apple stock that will vest over an unspecified time period. The deal is expected to close before the end of September.

OUR HONEYMOON IS OVER. - FEMI FANI KAYODE

If they ever tell my story let them say I walked with giants. Men rise and fall like the winter wheat but these names will never die…let them say I lived in the time of Hector, tamer of horses…let them say I lived in the time of Achilles”- the Iliad, Homer.

The words of Odysseus in Homer’s epic and ancient poem entitled,’’The Iliad’’, have always moved me. Those words are deep and profound; they stir my soul and rekindle my spirit.

How I wish Nigeria had it’s own ancient poets and great thinkers like Socrates, Plato, Aristotle and Homer who could remind generations to come about our past exploits with their inspiring, compelling and historic prose.

Yet I look at our country today and I am not encouraged or inspired. Many have asked why I should say this. Permit me to answer that question by posing a few of my own.

WE WILL NOT NEGOTIATE WITH TERRORISTS (BOKO HARAM) - PRESIDENT JONATHAN

Against the backdrop of divergent views on the need to negotiate with the Boko Haram Islamic sect for the release of more than 200 schoolgirls abducted by the sect from Chibok, Borno State, President Goodluck Jonathan re-echoed the government position, yesterday, declaring that the Federal Government will not with the sect for the release of the girls. He said the abducted girls must be released unconditionally.

Senate President David Mark, on his part, had harsh words for the insurgents. He said Nigeria will never negotiate to exchange her people with animals who have declared war against parts of Nigeria even as former Chief of Army Staff, Lt General TY Danjuma argued that Boko Haram had friends among Nigerians and such people should prevail on the sect to release the girls unconditionally.

CORRUPTION IN THE MINISTRY OF DEFENCE & MILITARY IS THE HURDLE AGAINST THE WAR ON TERROR IN NIGERIA.

The United States Under Secretary of State for Civilian Security, Democracy and Human Rights, Sarah Sewall, has said that corruption is hindering Nigeria’s efforts at ending   insurgency in the North-East.

Sewall, who appeared before a hearing of the House Foreign Affairs Committee on Wednesday, alongside a Pentagon top Africa official, Amanda Dory, added that the military must overcome entrenched corruption and incompetence for it to   rescue the over 200 schoolgirls abducted by Boko Haram on April 14.

She said that despite Nigeria’s $5.8bn security budget for 2014, “corruption prevents supplies as basic as bullets and transport vehicles from reaching the front lines of the struggle against Boko Haram.”

DIRECT YOUR PROTEST TO THE KIDNAPPERS OF THE GIRLS AND NOT THE PRESIDENCY - PRESIDENT JONATHAN SPEAKS.

President Goodluck Jonathan on Thursday urged those who have been protesting the abduction of over 200 schoolgirls in Chibok, Borno State, to henceforth direct their protest to the Boko Haram terrorists and not the government.

The President also urged the protesters to learn from citizens of other countries who do not blame their governments for any terrorist act.

He has however admitted publicly for the first time that his administration was currently consulting with some stakeholders with a view to exploring what he called alternative methods of resolving the present crisis.

US DEPLOYS AIR FORCE PERSONNEL TO LOCATE MISSING CHIBOK SCHOOL GIRLS.

Eighty U.S. Air Force personnel have begun their mission in Chad to help locate nearly 300 schoolgirls kidnapped in neighboring Nigeria, a U.S. military spokesman said Thursday.

The girls and young women were kidnapped on April 15 from a school in the northeast Nigerian town of Chibok by an Islamic extremist group known as Boko Haram. The group's leader has threatened to sell most of the estimated 276 schoolgirls still being held into slavery unless the Nigerian government releases detained militants. Reports say some girls were taken across borders into Chad and Cameroon.

Chuck Prichard, a spokesman at the U.S. military's Africa Command in Germany, said Thursday that the 80 Air Force personnel were moved to Chad from a location inside the United States. Prichard did not say precisely where the 80 were previously stationed.

A national day of mourning has been declared in Colombia to honour 32 children who were burned alive when the bus they were travelling in caught fire.

According to the women, who could barely walk, “one of us (the teenage girl) was raped repeatedly, after being thoroughly beaten by the herdsmen. At the moment, she is neither able to walk nor talk.”

HOW BOKO HARAM AMBUSHED AND MURDERED NIGERIA'S FINEST SOLDIERS.

On May 12 2014, a group of soldiers selected from the Special Operations Battalion of the Nigerian Army headquarters were asked to proceed on an operation in Bita, Borno State. The mission, according to military sources who spoke to SaharaReporters, was informed by actionable intelligence showing that Boko Haram militants had been sighted in the area.

The village of Bita had witnessed numerous attacks by Boko Haram insurgents to the point that the residents had fled since February of this year to other locations, abandoning their community to the militants.

The selected soldiers had been taken from their operational base in Mubi, Adamawa State, and made to join some soldiers from the “213” battalion from the newly created “7 Division” of the Nigerian army stationed inside Maimalari Barracks.

The Police chief gave the assurance at the premises of the Jos University Teaching Hospital on Wednesday, when he visited victims at the hospitals.

REIGN OF TERROR - A CHALLENGE TO STATE GOVERNMENTS.

In a show of criminal defiance, about 60 armed robbers recently raided eight streets in one night in Mushin, Lagos State, Nigeria’s commercial capital. By the time the felons exited, they had vandalised most of the houses, raped several women and destroyed 30 cars parked overnight on streets such as Ereko, Coker Lane, New Balogun and Ayonuga.

In the new uptick of violent crime in the state, the hoodlums operated for about six hours, till dawn, robbing in the community unchallenged by security men. In a state that has become renowned for its relative safety amidst the huge security challenges facing the Nigerian state, this is a misnomer. A witness said, “Around 1am, they started going from house to house, robbing the occupants. They stole phones, money and everything they saw. People were crying throughout the night. It was terrible.” Where were the police and the task force operatives when the hoodlums were on the loose? It is inconceivable that some of the residents of the area did not alert the police through telephone calls and text messages.

BOKO HARAM MAY RELEASE MORE THAN 100 GIRLS NEXT WEEK.

Reports indicates that Boko Haram, the terrorist group that abducted over 200 schoolgirls in Chibok, Borno State, may have abandoned its prisoner swap for Chibok girls position, as it plans to begin the release of the girls from next week.

According to Telegraph, a United Kingdom (UK) newspaper, it was claimed that the sect was willing to conduct a “gradual” release of its hostages, in return for the release of Boko Haram prisoners in Nigerian jails.

In a significant concession, the group, it was learnt, had abandoned demands for its top commanders to be released, seemingly aware that this would be politically impossible for the Nigerian government.
The reported details of Boko Haram’s offer of an imminent prisoner exchange was published last week, when

HOW MASTERMIND OF NYANYA BOMBING WAS ARRESTED.

The arrest of Sadiq Aminu Ogwuche, mastermind of Nyanya bomb blast, was made possible through on-going collaboration of Nigeria and Sudan’s intelligence community, Sudanese High Commissioner to Nigeria, Dr. Tagelsir Mahgoub Ali, revealed to Vanguard, weekend.

Ambassador Ali, who spoke about the role of his country’s security agencies in the arrest of Ogwuche in Sudan, in an exclusive interview in Abuja, also revealed that Nigerian visa applicants were now required to come with verifiable references as proof of not having any connection with extremists or terrorists organisations.

Ogwuche, fingered as the mastermind of Nyanya blasts that claimed over 70 lives, was declared wanted alongside one other, with a bounty of N25million placed on his head by Nigerian security forces.

GOODBYE NIGERIA, WELCOME ODUDUWA REPUBLIC - FANI KAYODE

“If they ever tell my story let them say I walked with giants, men rise and fall like the Winter wheat but these names will never die… Let them say I lived in the time of Hector, tamer of horses…let them say I lived in the time of Achilles”- the Iliyad, Homer.

The words of Odysseus in Homer’s epic and ancient poem titled ”The Iliyad” (which in my view is the greatest poem that was ever written and which was quoted in the opening and last scene of the famous Hollywood blockbuster film titled ”Troy”) have always moved me. Those words are deep and profound: they stir my soul and rekindle my spirit.

They speak of and reflect the essence of Ancient Greece with its rich and exciting history, its extraordinary heroes and heroines and its all-powerful and all-knowing gods, titans and immortals. How I wish that I could conjure up such great and powerful words about the history of my nation Nigeria and her heroes past.

IMPERATIVES OF SAFE SCHOOLS INITIATIVE IN THE NORTH.

After five years of facing frequent murderous attacks from Boko Haram, students in Northern Nigeria will soon get some measure of relief. The United Nations has corralled some of our business leaders to set aside a $10 million fund that will be used to make the schools safe.

The World Economic Forum for Africa, which ended last Friday in Abuja, provided a platform for the initiative. A total of 500 schools, mostly located in the North-East zone, will benefit from this initial intervention, in response to challenges posed by the April 14 abduction of 276 Chibok schoolgirls. The outrage and outpouring of sympathy from the international community have been torrential.

The Safe Schools Initiative is highly commendable and it came at the instance of the UN Special Envoy for Education, Gordon Brown.  Typical of leadership in Nigeria, neither the state governors in the North, nor the Federal Government, had thought about this necessity, despite the fact that what Boko Haram stands for —Western education is forbidden – ought to have alerted them to the need to guarantee the safety of the pupils, who, by going to school, seem to have dared these mindless, rabid Islamists.

EXPLORING SOLID MINERALS POTENTIAL

It is mind-blowing to see a country such as Nigeria wallowing in abject poverty and having a comatose industrial sector due to inadequate attention and political will to transform the abundant minerals and metals endowed by God across the country.

The dependence on oil had become worrisome as the economy of the country had not recorded significant diversifications, particularly in the minerals and metals sector. Those in government are not keen in developing and expanding the solid minerals sector as they are yet to realise that in global trade the world has gone beyond oil, whereby the nation’s prosperity is measured.

Every state and local government in Nigeria is blessed with various minerals and metals in commercial quantities. There is no gainsaying that the government and investors are yet to key into the money spinning sector, because it had become a world attraction in global trade.

MAN DIES MYSTERIOUSLY WHILE ATTEMPTING TO STEAL SKULL FROM A GRAVE.

Despite the increase in cases of jungle justice being meted out to suspected kidnappers and ritualists lately, most especially in Oyo, Ogun, Osun and other states, some desperate ritualists are still not deterred by these horrible deaths, as an unidentified young man in Ilobu community, in the Irepodun Local Government Area of Osun State, met his Waterloo in the early hours of Wednesday while attempting to cut off the head of a corpse, buried in Tonto compound in the area.

The suspect’s accomplices fled in terror after seeing half his body get stuck mysteriously in the grave. His death has generated concern among the terrified residents of the Ilobu community.

Saturday Tribune reports that the victim and his partners in crime allegedly came to Tonto compound in the early hours of Wednesday with a plot to exhume the corpse of an aged woman and sever her decomposed head, allegedly for ritual purposes.

A credible source in the community, who did not want to be named, told Saturday Tribune that “this particular corpse was buried five years ago and the suspected ritualist attended the burial in Ilobu.”

CRITICISM AND THE UNMISTAKABLE SIGNS OF A SOCIETY IN DECLINE.

In the fight against corruption where he could have made a good impression, the President’s achievement is far below average.

As I argued sometime ago, the presidential pardon granted Diepriye Alamieyeseigha, former Bayelsa State governor, who was impeached for embezzlement of public funds and under whom he served as deputy governor is a ringing testimony that Jonathan lacks the will to checkmate corruption where it matters most – at the highest echelons of governance.

Again, the slow response of our security forces to the Nyanya carnage and abduction of hundreds of secondary school girls in Chibok by evil-minded misanthropes under the aegis of Boko Haram underscores the growing inability of government to provide security for ordinary Nigerians.

WHO KILLED AISHA FALODE'S SON??????

Seven months ago, in October last year, when 19-year-old Toba Falode left Nigeria for Dubai, in the United Arab Emirates, his mother, Aisha Falode had high hopes for him.

Toba was admitted to study Audio Production at the SAE Institute, Dubai. Fondly known as “Tyler Hendrix Fray,” he is described by friends as a young, talented and inspirational musician, who was a gift to his family and friends.

Sadly, on February 15, that gift was snatched away from a family and his mother’s embrace by the cold hands of death in faraway Dubai. The official cause of death reportedly stated that Toba died as a result of ‘a fall from a great height and the impact from the fall.’

Until his death, Toba lived on the 17th floor (Apartment 1703) in Manchester Towers, Dubai Marina, Dubai.

BOKO HARAM WRITES SCHOOL INFORMING THEM OF IMPENDING ATTACK.

Thirty-four days after the fundamentalist Islamic sect, Boko Haram, abducted over 200 schoolgirls from Government Secondary School, Chibok, Borno State, it has threatened to kidnap more pupils.

The United States of America, France, Britain, Israel and Canada are among the foreign countries that have pledged to help Nigeria find the schoolgirls that were kidnapped by Boko Haram on April 14.

The pupils were kidnapped in the night and their hostels were burnt. However, while Boko Haram transported them in trucks to its Sambisa Forest stronghold, over 50 of the schoolgirls escaped from the sect.

MY VISIT TO CHIBOK WILL NOT BRING BACK THE MISSING GIRLS - PRESIDENT JONATHAN

President Goodluck Jonathan on Saturday said his physical presence in Chibok, Borno State, where over 200 schoolgirls were abducted on April 14, would not solve the problem.

He said since the abducted girls were not being held in the school, the major challenge before him and his government now was to locate and rescue them.

Jonathan spoke while answering a question during a press conference held to announce the conclusion of a regional summit on security in Nigeria held in Paris, France.

The President had not visited the community since the incident happened over a month ago.

THE COMMANDER-IN-CHIEF CHICKENS OUT - BAMIDELE ATURU

The cancellation of the presidential visit to Chibok on any ground whatsoever is an abandonment of the unwritten responsibilities of the office of the President. It is now clear that the President and his aides do not understand the scope of his presidential responsibilities and this is very scary.

The President, for God’s sake, is first and foremost the Father of the Nation. In that capacity he is the chief mobiliser and galvanizer of the people. The President is expected to give hope to the people even when all seems hopeless; it is the part of the functions of the President to show courage when fear looms everywhere.

What manner of father would desert his children and refuse to visit them on account that danger looms in the abode of his children? As one African writer puts it, whenever the lives of others depend on us, one has no right to fear even when one is afraid.

BOKO HARAM MURDERS ONE CHINESE AND ABDUCTS TEN IN CAMEROON.

Boko Haram gunmen have killed a Chinese worker in Cameroon and kidnapped 10 others overnight, piling more pressure on leaders meeting in Paris  to thrash out a tougher strategy against the Nigerian Islamists.

Militants stormed an encampment used by Chinese road workers late Friday in a region of northern Cameroon just across the border from the strongholds where they sparked global outrage by abducting more than 200 schoolgirls last month.

"The Boko Haram militants were heavily armed, they came in five vehicles," an official in Waza, a town near the site of the attack, told AFP on condition of anonymity.

He said the camp where the Chinese road workers stayed was usually guarded by soldiers from Cameroon's elite Rapid Intervention Battalion, but that many of the troops were in Yaounde for a military parade marking National Day on May 20.
