PICTURE OF BOY RESCUED FROM KIDNAPPER'S DEN IN OGUN STATE

Fate smiled on an unidentified young boy hawking on Alhaji Jamiu Sulaimon Street in Itele, Ota area of Ogun State on Tuesday evening as he was rescued from kidnappers in the area, just as he was about to be killed.

No 3, Alhaji Jamiu Sulaimon, where the boy was rescued is unarguably one of the most beautiful houses on the street but no one could have imagined the horror discovered behind its high walls.

When our correspondent visited the scene on Wednesday morning, a police patrol vehicle was stationed in front of the compound to ward off curious residents and looters.

CONTROVERSIAL MINISTER OF PETROLEUM DIEZIANI MADUEKE LOSES BID TO OCCUPY OPEC SEC-GEN SEAT.

The Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries on Wednesday agreed to keep its current Secretary-General, Libyan Abdullah al-Badri, thus not confirming the nomination of President Goodluck Jonathan for the influential position.

Jonathan had nominated the Minister of Petroleum Resources, Mrs. Diezani Alison-Madueke, to succeed the long-serving incumbent, who had previously planned to retire in 2012.

But the 12-member organisation, according to a report by The Wall Street Journal, decided to extend al-Badri’s tenure, dashing the ambition of Alison-Madueke.

JONATHAN IS PLOTTING TO ASSASINATE ME - GOVERNOR KWANKWASO

Kano State governor, Rabiu Kwankwaso, on Wednesday accused President Goodluck Jonathan of plotting to eliminate him, in a fresh twist to a longstanding row between the two leaders.

In an exclusive interview with PREMIUM TIMES Wednesday, Mr. Kwankwaso said the president was after his life and had ordered the withdrawal of half of his security details in a ploy to open him up to physical attacks.

“I have told my friends, and people of Kano, Nigerians and indeed the international community to hold Jonathan responsible for whatever happens to Kwankwaso, his family or even the people of Kano state,” Mr. Kwankwaso said at Kano State governor’s lodge in Abuja.

JUNE 12 ELECTIONS - 21 YEARS AFTER.

Many days pass unnoticed in the annals of our country, but not June 12. It has been canonised, and fittingly so, as a defining moment in Nigeria’s history. A presidential election held on June 12, 1993 and won by the business mogul, Moshood Abiola, was unaccountably annulled by the military dictator, Ibrahim Babangida. Abiola, who was incarcerated by the Sani Abacha regime for demanding the restoration of his electoral mandate, died in mysterious circumstances in 1998.

The annulled presidential poll was remarkable, not just for its fairness, but for breaking barriers to national unity, especially our fault lines of religion and ethnicity. Abiola, the flag bearer of the Social Democratic Party, was a Muslim and he chose a fellow Muslim, Babagana Kingibe, as his running mate. This Muslim-Muslim ticket defeated a Muslim-Christian ticket of Bashir Tofa and Sylvester Ugoh of the National Republican Convention.

VICTORY FOR LASU STUDENTS AS FASHOLA ANNOUNCES REDUCTION IN TUITION FEES

In what may be considered as victory for LASU students who protested peacefully and occupied the Lagos State Government house last week, the Lagos State Government has announced a reduction in the tuition of the state university.

The government said it would reduce the fees by between 34 per cent and 60 per cent across the different faculties and courses.

Students of the Lagos State University had staged many protests to air their grievances against the “high school fees” and had demanded its reduction.

Renaissance: New Emir, New Kano, New North, New Nigeria, New Africa.. -

High scale intellectual dialogue, economic and social methodical strategizing, complexity cognizant address and redress of existing and future societal challenges and immense strength, are some of the features that defined the ancient Kano dynasty and that also define its new Emir.

The ascension of HRH Sanusi Lamido Sanusi to the Emirship of Kano, Nigeria’s #2 Muslim leadership position and by most measures, the number one traditional leadership office of northern Nigeria can be described as a meeting of two of nature’s most powerful African forces.

The Kano dynasty is one of the most notable kingdoms in ancient world history. In immense wealth, population, economic activity and cultural and intellectual output, Kano rivaled any European kingdom. It was the most prosperous of all provinces under the Fulani Dan Fodio Empire. Lord Luggard, the first Governor General of Nigeria estimated in 1904 that there were 170 walled towns still in existence in the whole of just the Kano province of Nigeria. He described Kano: “Commercial emporium of the western Sudan.’ Of its wall, he said, ‘I have never seen, nor even imagined, anything like it in Africa.”

POLICE ORDERED TO ARREST EMIR OF KANO, SANUSI LAMIDO SANUSI.

The Nigerian police have been ordered to arrest the newly-crowned Emir of Kano, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, on fraud-related charges stemming from his tenure as Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).

According to reliable sources at the Presidency in Abuja, the team of policemen at the Emir’s palace in Kano received the order from the Nigeria police headquarters to place Mr. Sanusi under arrest if he leaves the Kano Governor’s lodge.

The sources told SaharaReporters that Mr. Sanusi was to be arrested at his private home on Sunday night after his appointment was announced by the Kano State Governor.  It would be recalled that the presidency embarked on several frantic measures to frustrate the former CBN governor’s emergence as Emir, including the premature congratulations of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to one of the candidates before the choice was announced.

Samson Oguntayo, 32, a self-employed events manager who lives in neighbouring Cornmill House, said he and his partner saw the couple fall.

As of 8.02pm on Tuesday, the palace was still under lock and key. Punch reports that the presence of policemen deployed there on Sunday to keep away protesting youths was also still noticeable.

Under normal circumstances, Sanusi would have after receiving the staff of office resumed his royal duties at the   palace   as has been the tradition for over 1,000 years.

NPA FAILS TO REMIT N713BN TO FEDERAL GOVERNMENT.

With Nigerians yet to come to grips with the absurdity of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company not remitting billions of dollars of oil income to the national treasury, another public corporation has been fingered for engaging in the dubious act. Last week, the National Conference Committee on Finance told a shocked plenary that the Nigerian Ports Authority had failed to remit N713 billion to the Federation Account over six years.

This is impunity at its worst. It is a reckless regime of sleaze that has weighed down Nigeria’s maritime industry from playing a leading role in West Africa.

A combination of pervasive corruption and mismanagement has relegated our maritime industry to an also-ran in the sub-region, when, with its trade volume, it should be the hub of the shipping industry.

BOKO HARAM ABDUCTS 20 WOMEN NEAR CHIBOK.

The women, according to Bloomberg, a United States-based news agency, and The Guardian of London, were taken after the gunmen attacked a nomadic settlement known as Garkin Fulani at the weekend.

Bloomberg and The Guardian of London both quoted a member of the Vigilante Group of Nigeria, Alhaji Tar, as having said the women were herded into vehicles at gunpoint and driven off to an unknown location.

PDP WARNS NEW EMIR OF KANO "SANUSI LAMIDO SANUSI" AGAINST PARTISAN POLITICS.

The party said it expects the new Emir to remain non-partisan deserving of the exalted and revered office.
The party’s congratulatory message is contained in a statement issued Monday night by its National Publicity Secretary, Olisa Metuh.

It came more than 24 hours after the party committed a huge blunder by rushing to congratulate Mr. Sanusi’s rival, Sanusi Ado Bayero, even when official announcement of the chosen candidate had not been made.

8-YEAR-OLD BRIDE DIES AT THE HANDS OF 40-YEAR -OLD HUSBAND ON WEDDING NIGHT IN YEMEN

An eight year-old child bride died in Yemen on her wedding night after suffering internal injuries due to sexual trauma. Human rights organizations are calling for the arrest of her husband, who was five times her age.

Al Nahar, Lebanon, reported that the death occurred in the tribal area of Hardh in northwestern Yemen, which borders Saudi Arabia. This brings even more attention to the already existing issue of forced child marriages in the Middle East.

“According to the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), between 2011 and 2020, more than 140 million girls will become child brides. Furthermore, of the 140 million girls who will marry before the age of 18, 50 million will be under the age of 15.”

HOW THE EMIR OF KANO ESCAPED ARREST.

The new Emir of Kano Lamido Sanusi on Sunday narrowly escaped being arrested by security operatives at his personal residence in Kano hours after he was appointed to the coveted throne.

A source who declined to be named for security reasons said the Kano state Government hurriedly sneaked Mr. Sanusi out of his personal residence after receiving intelligence that the Federal Government was plotting to arrest him to stop him from being turbaned.

“It is true his royal highness did not sleep in his house after information came that there are moves to arrest him for reasons we don’t know,” the source said. “The governor had to arrange for him to be smuggled into the Government House where he passed the night.”

APPOINTMENT OF SANUSI LAMIDO SANUSI AS EMIR OF KANO AND THE APC CONNECTION.

Suggestions to that effect were rife yesterday because of the heavy presence of chieftains of the party in Kano, following the death of Emir Ado Bayero.

Governor Rabiu Kwankwanso of Kano State, who joined the party last November, came under serious pressure from the APC chieftains who stayed over after the burial of the late emir.

Yesterday, senior party officials were jubilant over the emergence of a renowned critic of President Goodluck Jonathan as the traditional ruler of the city with the highest number of votes in Northern Nigeria.

APOLOGIES TO LATE ANDREW AZAZI

As the security question in the country is gradually, if not completely, turning to a complete puzzle, which will take a lot more than the normal requirements to unravel, it is further aggravated by a myriad of confusing unfolding of events, criss-crossing of opinions and viewpoints from supposed experts and consultants on security, avalanche of media festering, and of course spinning and counter-spinning of moves.

Behind all these drama and activities, more and more lives are being savagely and avoidably cut short, more lands are being crippled and turned in to wastelands of blood and despair, and the cycle continues with no foreseeable end in sight. No one is talking here of the economies of such places which will take only God knows how long to resuscitate.

POLICE KILLS APC SUPPORTER AND ATTACKS GOVERNOR FAYEMI IN EKITI.

The members, who were returning from Oluyemi Kayode Stadium ‘after sweeping the place’, were ambushed by the police, who allegedly fired tear-gas and live bullets, to disperse them.

After surviving several rumours of her death, a  former Minister of Information and Communication and erstwhile Director General of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control, NAFDAC, Professor Dora Nkem Akunyili, bowed to ovarian cancer early yesterday.

BODY OF 17-YR-OLD NIGERIAN GIRL WHO COMMITTED SUICIDE BECAUSE SHE WAS ACCUSED OF CHEATING IN EXAM HAS BEEN FOUND.

Omotayo Adeoye was a brilliant student who attends one of New York City’s elite schools, the high school of Math, Science and Engineering in Manhattan. Sadly, her body was found floating in the Hudson River just a week short of a citywide police search for her.

Adeoye, 17, had committed suicide on May 29th by jumping off into the Hudson River near the George Washington Bridge Thursday afternoon. It came after the young student had been caught cheating on a difficult German Language exam by her teacher, Eva Malikova, at the elite school. Humiliated in front of her classmates, Adeoye immediately left the school building, but not before leaving behind a suicide note.

The short note, later found by school officials and police read, “I just want to go away forever on the bottom of the river.”

The Sunderland striker struck in either half as Jurgen Klinsmann's side secured a comfortable victory in their final World Cup warm-up, with a late penalty from Victor Moses not enough for Stephen Keshi's Super Eagles to earn a share of the spoils.

PLAYERS WE WON'T GET TO SEE IN BRAZIL 2014 WORLD CUP.

The joy of making a 30-man provisional World Cup squad is nothing compared to the crushing misery of failing to make the final 23. To be so close, yet so far, from what might be considered a minor peak of footballing achievement short of actually, say, winning the thing has to break the heart.

For some, there is perhaps an early sense that they're there for experience and team bonding with the future in mind. Take Germany's fledglings called in for training camp Kevin Volland and Max Meyer were never really considered likely to fly to Brazil, yet served their purpose over a productive week in South Tyrol.

Then there are the untimely injuries that rob squads of their prize talent, some of whom were hurt after the June 2 squad deadline. (FIFA rules allow for injured players to be swapped out for replacements up to 24 hours before the team's first World Cup game.) While the likes of Diego Costa and Luis Suarez were deemed worthy of a spot despite lingering niggles and knacks, there are others about whom the physio wasn't so upbeat.

HOW TINUBU, SARAKI, ODILI AND OTHERS MILK THEIR STATES THROUGH OBNOXIOUS PENSION LAWS.

A massive public outcry forced Akwa Ibom Governor, Godswill Akpabio, to backtrack on a scandalous multibillion pension plan for himself and other former governors of the state this week.

But a review of similar pension laws in at least half a dozen states shows how Nigerians have spent a fortune maintaining their profligate former governors, and ex-deputies, with pensions for life, free health care, security, transportation, cars, accommodation and jobs- the same needs other citizens are deprived of daily.

The worst cases yet examined are in Kwara, Lagos, Gombe, Zamfara, Akwa Ibom and Rivers States.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police in New Brunswick confirmed on its Twitter feed that three officers were dead and two others had sustained non-life threatening injuries. Police spokesman Paul Greene confirmed the deaths.

The RCMP said on Twitter that they were looking for 24-year-old Justin Bourque, of Moncton. The police force tweeted an image of a suspect wearing military camouflage and wielding two guns.

CAMEROONIAN ARMY KILLS 60 BOKO HARAM MEMBERS AS 100 PERISH IN BORNO VILLAGE ATTACK.

More than 100 persons were killed, yesterday, in a communal clash involving three border communities in Gwoza Local Government Council of Borno State. Members of Attagara, Aghapalwa and Gwoshe border communities were said to have taken up arms against one another. It, however, turned out to be a religious war between Christians and Muslims.

It will be recalled that no fewer than nine Christian worshippers were said to have been killed last Sunday, by Islamic militants during a Sunday service in Attagara village, leaving many others critically injured. According to reports, the youths in a spontaneous reprisal attack mobilized themselves and killed 37 of them.

However, following the reprisal attacks, sources said, some Muslim youths believed that the Christian youths killed other Muslims rather than Boko Haram members, who were responsible for the death of the nine Christian worshippers as well as the burning of churches in Attagara Village.

That sparked a frantic search of their home, with garbage bins being upended and their contents picked through, an effort that left Nosiru and his wife who are originally from Nigeria empty handed and feeling 'miserable'.

Some of the delegates said they had been thrown out of their hotels because, with their allowances unpaid, they could not afford to pay their lodging bills.

A delegate who asked for anonymity stated that he had packed out of his hotel room. “I have not been paid, so where will I find the money to pay the hotel?” the delegate stated. He added that he had moved into a friend’s apartment in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital.

GREED & SELF CENTREDNESS IN LEADERSHIP - THE AKPABIO EXAMPLE.

There is a growing penchant for greed and self-centredness in leadership as Nigeria enters her 16th year of unbroken democratic odyssey.

This acquisitive tendency of high profile public officials is demonstrated in the new pension bill passed last week by the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly. Known as the Akwa Ibom State Governors and Deputy Governors Pension Law 2014, it provides a total of about N200 million annually, for life, as pension and gratuity for a former governor and his spouse. It also provides generous pension and gratuity for past deputy governors and their spouses for life.

Even at face value, the new law, which also covers all elected former governors of Akwa Ibom origin who served in the old Cross River State, is highly irresponsible. It is an anti-people law that should be discarded.
