A former Director General of the the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) and ex minister of Information, Professor Dora Akunyili (59), has died according to a family source and as quoted by SaharaReporters.
She died in an India Hospital where she has been receiving treatment for an undisclosed ailment.
Dora (born July 14, 1954 in Makurdi, Benue State) was a pharmacist and governmental administrator who has gained international recognition and won hundreds of awards for her work in pharmacology, public health and human rights.
Akunyili ran for election as Senator for Anambra Central on the All Progressive Grand Alliance[APGA] platform in April 2011 but was defeated by Chris Ngige of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN). She immediately sent a petition to the Independent National Electoral Commission disputing the result.
Dora will be fondly remembered for her success in the war against counterfeit drugs, a cause that almost cost her life when she survived an assassination attempt.
She disappeared from public view after she lost the Anambra state senate election few years ago.
Dora was a delegate at the ongoing CONFAB where her pale look grew public outcry. She was flown out for medical treatment when her health deteriorated.
She was indeed a shining star, an exemplary leader who worked hard to give meaning to the lives of many poor masses who were directly or indirectly affected by the effects of fake drugs.
May her soul rest in the peace of the lord.
Amen.
