Doctors believe Lamar Odom will have to learn to walk and talk again during a lengthy stint of rehabilitation expected to take many months, it has been claimed.
TMZ reported the former star basketballer is likely to have suffered some undetermined permanent damage to his body after he collapsed on Tuesday during a drink and drug-fueled binge in a Nevada brothel.
Having now awoken from a three-day coma, his health is slowly improving but his rehabilitation is expected to require the use of therapists for several months.
It's also believed his estranged wife Khloe Kardashian has vowed to stay with him throughout the ordeal he faces - and is refusing to leave his side, People reported.
Since awakening from the Odom's health has been making a steady improvement as the Kardashian clan united around his bedside in a Las Vegas hospital over the weekend.
The former LA Lakers star, for the first time, could socialize and move around, and is 'heading in the right direction,' E! News reported.
Sources said Khloe has become a 'shell of herself' since Odom's collapse. Being his legal guardian - in charge of his medical decisions - has 'been very hard on her', Us Magazine reported.
Her mother Kris and all sisters except for Kendall initially flew to the hospital on Thursday, and left a few hours later. Khloe, however, refused to leave Odom's side.
It remains uncertain what long-term damage Odom faces.
Previously, reports claimed four of his organs - including his kidneys - were failing and that doctors were losing hope for him the longer he was in a coma.
The good news about Odom regaining consciousness and breathing on his own comes after security footage emerged that appears to show him taking pills and drinking with a prostitute in the brothel where he was fell ill.
The surveillance clip reportedly shows the basketball star slumped over in his seat as he is given a drink and a shot by the bikini-clad woman at the Love Ranch Vegas on Saturday – three days before he collapsed.
Odom is later apparently seen taking a pill out of a small bag and popping it into his mouth, it was reported by Radar Online.
However, it is not clear from the grainy footage what the person was taking or whether he did ingest anything.
After most of the Kardashian and Jenner women returned to Las Vegas on Saturday, their social media accounts filled with good news.
'I believe in the power of prayer!' Kim Kardashian tweeted on Saturday, with a picture of her and Lamar dancing. 'Thx 4 ur prayers Lammy- So happy Kendall & I could make u smile 2day God is good!'
'Come on Lamar!!!' Kris Jenner wrote on an Instagram post just hours after news of Odom's positive turnaround broke. 'You are such a champion. I know you got this,' she continued.
However, Khloe has stayed in Odom's hospital room, keeping an eye on his care. 'Making these decisions is very hard, the source told Us magazine. 'Kris came and was very helpful and supportive.
'Most people have been waiting in a waiting room outside the room and will go in one at a time. Khloe has really been the only one in the room 24/7, sleeping by his bedside and keeping vigil.'
Malika Haqq also played the dutiful best friend to Khloe on Friday. The 32-year-old Kardashian side-kick was seen arriving at Sunrise Hospital in Las Vegas to visit pal Khloe while her ex was being treated.
The brunette reality star kept a low profile as she talked to staff at the facility.
Sources said on Saturday that Odom has had the 'best 24 hours' since his hospitalization, TMZ reported.
His children Lamar Jr and Destiny certainly appeared to have received some good news as they were photographed smiling Friday evening after leaving the hospital, along with their grandfather Joe.
Entertainment Tonight meanwhile has released the itemized bill from Lamar's stay at the Love Ranch brothel, which breaks down what he spent his money on - and reveals that prostitutes Ryder Cherry and Monica Monroe were made available to Lamar for the price of $37,500 each.

He also spent $100 on transportation to the establishment, racked up a bar tab of $1,036 and shelled out $3,000 on another woman, whose name is Simone Sinclair.

'It was Lamar's idea. He said, 'I'll give you two girls for $75,000 the entire time I'm there minimum of four days and max of five days,'' said brothel owner Dennis Hof.
'We picked him up at his place in Las Vegas, brought him out there, great mood, ready to have a good time. He just wanted a little peace and quiet and to get away from the pressures of his life.'

It is not known what Lamar and Simone did together or why he paid the young woman - who is a Kardashian lookalike - $3,000.
In an interview with Access Hollywood on Friday, brothel manager TJ Moore said that Lamar had all the women at the ranch sign confidentiality agreements on Sunday while also revealing it was phone calls from his assistant that made the basketball player upset that day.
She also said he had watched an episode of Keeping Up With the Kardashians while he was at the establishment.
Lamar woke up from his coma on Friday and spoke to Khloe Kardashian, three days after he was found unconscious at a brothel.
The former basketball player said 'Hey Baby' to Khloe, according to Page Six.
The 35-year-old is believed to have suffered a stroke after overdosing on drugs during a four-day bender at the brothel in Pahrump, Nevada.
In an interview with USA Today, Lamar's former coach at the University of Rhode Island Jim Harrick described the moment that Lamar came out of his coma after he heard Khloe's voice.
'She reached down and said 'you know I love you' and he kind of nodded,' said Harrick.
'Three or four days after being scared to death and fearing the worst, that is a little hope, a little progress. She texted me that (information).'

Destiny, 17, and Lamar Jr, 13, arrived in Las Vegas Wednesday night along with their mother Liza Morales and Lamar's aunt JaNean Mercer.
On Friday, Morales wrote on Twitter; 'The TRUTH is God is good. All the time. Continued prayers for my children and their father. Thank you for the support and well wishes.'
Destiny and Lamar Jr have also spoken about their father, after Khloe reportedly paid to fly them to Las Vegas.
In a statement given to E! News, they said: 'Thanks for your outpouring of prayers and support for our dad.
'We are here with our family and friends. We appreciate everyone respecting our privacy at this time. We ask for your continued prayers.
Since Odom's collapse, his prospects of recovery have looked grim according to several outlets who gave reports that he was 'in dire straights' and had just a 50/50 chance of survival.

A dancer at the high-end gentleman's club said the star spent five consecutive days in the VIP room and allegedly asked staff for sexual favors.
'He was spending money like crazy,' the woman said, adding that he splashed out $5,000 a day on alcohol, non-stop lap dances and VIP treatment.
'He was making all the girls drink and party with him,' she added.
The insider claims she and other girls were asked to 'entertain him' but she refused his sexual advances because she heard he was 'difficult and demanding'.
News of his time at the Love Ranch brothel comes as a new report sheds light on Odom and Khloe's tormented relationship in the weeks before his tragic overdose during the $75,000 bender.
According to Radar Online, Odom had 'pleaded' with Khloe to stop recording his phone calls for her reality show, but she reportedly ignored his requests, saying he owed her after the way he treated her during their marriage.
'Khloe would either ignore the texts and voicemail messages asking her to stop, or she would tell him, 'You owe me this after you humiliated me by cheating with other women',' the source said.
This comes from an insider who told the gossip site that they believe the Kardashians 'have blood on their hands' for 'demonizing and exploiting' Odom on their show.
'Lamar had no idea that he was going to be Khloe's storyline during the past season. She is always talking about how much she loves the guy, but has no problem exploiting Lamar for her gain.
'How low can Khloe go?' the source asked. 'Lamar would call her sobbing about losing his best friend this past summer, and the first thing she thinks is to document it?'
This echoes previous statements from Hof and prostitutes at the Love Ranch who said Odom became 'irate' and inconsolable after talking to someone on the phone on Sunday, allegedly about his portrayal on the show.
While Odom and Khloe have been separated since 2013, he has still remained a central point on the family's reality show.
One plot point on a recent episode involved Kim getting mad at Khloe for 'flirting' with her ex-husband on the phone.
The two signed divorce papers in July, but their split has not been finalized, so Khloe has been by Odom's side at the hospital, making medical decisions.
While the couple's pending divorce has alienated Odom from the Kardashians in recent years, news of his collapse brought the family together again, showing their deep-seated love for the former LA Lakers player.
