OBASANJO IS AN OVERGROWN CHILD OF CIRCUMSTANCE - PROFESSOR WOLE SOYINKA.

The Nobel laureate, Prof. Wole Soyinka, has described former President Olusegun Obasanjo as an overgrown child of circumstance.

Soyinka sharply criticised Obasanjo in his (Nobel laureate’s) new book, titled InterInventions: Between Defective Memory and the Public Lie – A Personal Odyssey in the Republic of Liars, presented in Abeokuta, Ogun State on Saturday.

Although Soyinka conceded that he used to be friendly with Obasanjo and admitted in the book that some stakeholders were making efforts to reconcile them, he said he owed it a responsibility to fundamentally respond to lies that Obasanjo allegedly told against him in his latest biography, titled, My Watch, described in InterInventions as Three-Carat Watch.

SUPREME COURT DISMISSES WIKE'S SUIT AGAINST ELECTION TRIBUNAL.

The Supreme Court on Tuesday, dismissed the suit filed by Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State, challenging the jurisdiction of the Rivers governorship election petition tribunal to hear a petition by candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Dakuku Peterside.

In his argument, Wike had argued that the tribunal sitting in Abuja had no jurisdiction over matters that transpired in the state, contending however, that the tribunal should have sat in Rivers State and not Abuja.

However, the tribunal was moved to Abuja on the ground of security concerns, like those of Akwa I‎bom, Yobe, Adamawa and Borno.

The governor, who was speaking to a crowd that gathered for a thanksgiving service at the Obi Wali International Conference Centre in Port Harcourt on Sunday, said the thanksgiving service was significant, adding that he would not have become a governor if the enemies’ plans had worked.

The two dominant political parties in Rivers State, All Progressives Congress, APC and the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, were yesterday flexing muscles over the court judgment that annulled the last governorship election in the state, even as they set their sights on a possible rerun.

Erstwhile governor of the state, Rotimi Amaechi fresh from his ministerial screening in Abuja, last Thursday, stormed the state, yesterday, to breathe life into the party’s structures. His successor and incumbent governor, Nyesom Wike also, yesterday, roused his associates to prepare for another election showdown.

Remarkably, both former political allies now turned arch political foes spoke at different thanksgiving services in Port-Harcourt, the state capital, where they called on the name of God to push their different agenda.

APC & PDP SENATORS DISAGREE OVER AMAECHI.

Senators of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Thursday disagreed before they eventually screened the former governor of Rivers, Rotimi Amaechi.

The disagreement ensued when PDP Minority Leader, Godswill Akpabio, raised a Point of Order on Amaechi’s screening when the report on the petition against him was yet to be considered.

Akpabio insisted that it was the rules of the Senate that when the Committee on Ethic and Privileges submits its report on a petition against a nominee, it must be considered before screening.

Were the law of comparative advantage to be fully operational, Nigeria would have benefited tremendously from an arrangement where its criminal cases would have been firmed out to Britain and America.

There could be no better way of resolving all those high profile cases of assassination, murder, kidnapping, treasury looting and the white-collar crimes that have been lying in our courts. There would also have been no better way for President Muhammadu Buhari to give some biting teeth to his avowed war on corruption.

As currently structured, Nigeria’s criminal justice system is ponderously frustrating; and totally skewed against the state, which appears pathetically powerless against its own laws, no thanks to the cynical manipulation of the elite.

DEJI OF AKURE BANS EZE NDIGBO TITLE.

The Deji of Akure, Oba Aladetoyinbo Aladelusi, has banned the title of ‘Eze Ndi Igbo’ in Akureland and ordered it to be reviewed and replaced with a non-controversial honorary title.

This is one of the conditions given by the monarch to end the crisis between him and the leader of the Igbo community in the town, Mr. Gregory Iloehike. The monarch said the condition must be met before Igbo traders in the area would be allowed to continue operating their businesses in the community.

The traditional ruler dethroned the Igbo leader last week and stopped his men from opening their shops following an alleged rude behaviour against the traditional ruler at his palace by the Igbo leader during a meeting with Oba Aladelusi.

POLITICAL SOLUTION TO SAVE BUKOLA SARAKI'S JOB FAILS.

These may not be good times for the Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki, as a complex negotiation to save his job through a political solution to his false asset declaration trial appeared to have failed.

The last-minute attempt to save Saraki was said to have been spearheaded by some leaders of the ruling All Progressives Congress but the efforts crumbled because of the conditions which Saraki had found impossible to satisfy.

If the efforts had not failed, a source said Saraki would not have appeared before the Code of Conduct Tribunal on Wednesday and be in the dock for the second time within one month.

BEAUTIFUL BRIDE PRESENTED CERTIFICATE OF PURITY TO HER FATHER TO PROVE SHE WAS A VIRGIN.

A bride presented her father with a 'certificate of purity' on her wedding day to prove she was a virgin.

Brelyn Bowman gave the framed document to her proud father, who is a pastor, before tying the knot with her groom Timothy earlier this month.

The statement on the signed certificate confirmed that her 'hymen is intact', citing a passage from the Bible that some Christians interpret as instruction to abstain from sex until marriage.

UPSURGE OF VIOLENT ROBBERIES IN LAGOS. Cc @AkinwunmiAmbode @PoiceNG.

Dare-devil armed robbers recently invaded a bank in FESTAC area of Lagos. Numbering over 40 and clad in military camouflage, they operated unchallenged for hours, carting away millions of Naira. Three lives were lost,  including a mother and her toddler.

The latest attack was the third in Lagos State in the last four months. A second generation bank was hit in the Lekki area and an undisclosed amount was carted away. Some of the policemen guarding the bank and a hawker were killed. A female-led robbery gang also unleashed terror on another bank in Ikorodu, weeks after. In the three operations, the criminals escaped through the water ways.

These and other violent robberies around the country call for more effective and rapid response policing. The low capacity of the police to respond to distress signals from citizens under the siege of criminals is very worrisome. Though the police claimed they recovered N27 million  from the hoodlums in the FESTAC robbery, we are concerned that in all three cases the police did not respond until so much damage was done and lives lost.
