A Kontagora High Court has sentenced a 40-year-old man, Isah Makeri, to a four-year jail term without an option of fine for raping a nine-year-old girl.
In the case which lasted about six months, Resident Counsel, Abubakar Suleiman, tendered exhibits and were all upheld by the presiding judge, Justice Yusuf Tanko Usman.
Before pronouncing his judgment on the convict, the judge had asked him whether he had a plea to mitigate the sentence but instead he pleaded guilty to the one-count charge of unlawful intercourse with the teenager and asked for pardon.
Justice Usman, therefore, convicted him under Section 283 of the Penal Code.
Meanwhile, another similar case involving three adults has been adjourned till September 10. They were alleged to have raped a 14-year-old girl in Kontagora town which contradicts Sections 79, 83 and 283 of the Pensl Code.
Chief counsel, Ahmed Attahiru, had tendered an application for motion on notice to add one more witness in the case and therefore prayed for additional 30days for the case to continue.
Joseph Usman, holding brief for counsel to the accused, did not raise an objection to the plea. The presiding judge, Justice Yusuf Tanko, therefore adjourned further hearing in the case.
