THE TRAGIC CELEBRATION

ALGERIAN FANS CELEBRATING
Twelve people are believed to have died and hundreds more have been injured as football fans celebrated Algeria's qualification for the World Cup finals.

At least 240 people were injured during celebrations across the North African nation after the national team beat Burkina Faso 1-0 to secure a place  in Brazil next summer. Algeria qualified on the away goals rule following a 3-2 defeat in Ouagadougou.

The result prompted huge crowds to pour into the streets and others sped around in cars waving flags. Five fans are believed to have been killed when a van came off the road and ended up in a ravine in the mountain town of Bejaia, east of Algiers, according to Sky News. Four other people are reported to have died in a car accident in Biskra, with three more said to have been killed in other parts of the country.

The match was reportedly policed by 15,000 security personnel.
