FORMER NIGERIAN ATHLETE AMBROSE MONYE FOUND GUILTY OF MURDER IN SOUTH AFRICA

AMBROSE MONYE
Former Nigerian athlete, Ambrose Monye, has been found guilty of the murder of Chanelle Henning by Judge Johan Kruger  of a North Gauteng High Court on Monday.

The 35-year-old Nigerian was said to be the “paymaster” and middleman in the drive-by shooting of the mother of one in 2011. Henning had just dropped her son of in school before she was gunned down.

Monye’s co-accused, Andre Gouws, was also found guilty. The two were said to have conspired with two others – Gerhardus du Plessis, a former policeman and Willem “Pike” Pieterse.

At the time of Monye’s judgement, Plessis and Pieterse were already serving 18-year prison terms after confessing to their roles in the murder in December 2011. Plessis had confessed to pulling the trigger that killed Henning.

However, their testimonies implicated Gouws and Monye. While delivering his judgement, Judge Kruger described the murder as a classic contract killing, saying Monye and Gouws clearly acted upon the instructions of their conspirators.

He described Gouws as the instigator. Kruger said without Gouws’s involvement, Monye would never have a motive or the information to have Henning killed. He said their testimonies “bear the mark of concocted afterthoughts designed to mask or divulge their own complicity,” adding that there was “no possibility that they could be reasonably, possibly true.

“Gouws wanted Channelle Henning killed. He requested Monye to obtain and provide the services of two men who would be willing to execute a murder. Monye would be remunerated by Gouws upon completion of the job.” The men face life behind bars when they are sentenced at a later stage.

Monye visibly held back tears as the judgement was handed down.
