RUSSIAN TROOPS FIRE FIRST SHOT IN CRIMEA TO WARD OFF UNARMED UKRAINIAN TROOPS.

Russian troops in control of the Belbek air base in Crimea fired warning shots into the air as around 300 Ukrainian soldiers, who previously manned the airfield, demanded their jobs back.
About a dozen Russian soldiers at the base warned the Ukrainians, who were marching unarmed, not to approach.

The stand-off comes as Vladimir Putin ordered thousands of Russian troops participating in military exercises near Ukraine's border to return to their base.

RAPISTS TAKING ADVANTAGE OF DEAF GIRLS - OYEDUNI ARULOGUN.

A Senior Lecturer in the Department of Health Promotion and Education, College of Medicine, University of Ibadan, on Monday said rapists in Ibadan were taking undue advantage of deaf girls.
Mr. Arulogun said in Ibadan that indication to this development was revealed by her latest research work entitled: “Sexual and Reproductive Health Needs of Deaf girls: A Case Study of Ibadan.’’

She said: “Many of the rapists of these deaf girls are their stepfathers and other people well known to them.
“I discovered during my research that they experience sexual, physical and psychological violence just like anyone else.

“It is a worrisome situation because when they are sexually violated, they can’t complain. “They don’t have the language to communicate and so most of the rape incidents go unreported to the security agents.

SANUSI'S REMOVAL AND EXECUTIVE DUPLICITY.

Hiding behind his finger, President Goodluck Jonathan recently suspended Lamido Sanusi, Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, from office over alleged financial recklessness. The President’s action is ill-advised and is rightly seen by many as a well choreographed vendetta against a man, who, a few days earlier, had exposed how the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation brazenly looted oil revenues.

The immediate consequences of his suspension bode ill for the economy: aggregate market value of equities quoted on the Nigerian Stock Exchange fell on the first day by N187 billion, just as the naira crashed from N162.9 to N170 to the dollar in the interbank market. This was the larger and delicate picture the President and his economic management team ignored or could not see; thus exposing the economy to grave risk.

Section 11 (2) (f) of the CBN Act that deals with the removal of the governor clearly states that it shall only be done when backed by two-thirds majority support of  the Senate.  But, instead of Jonathan sending details of Sanusi’s alleged wrongdoings to the parliament as demanded by law, he sent the nomination of his proposed successor, Godwin Emefiele. Garrison theatrics are not alien to his Presidency. He had in 2011 failed to recall the suspended President of the Court of Appeal, Ayo Salami, when the National Judicial Institute, vested with the powers to sanction him, advised that he be reinstated.

A new report by the United States has described Nigeria as a country where corruption, official impunity, and gross human rights violations occur at will.

CENTENARY CELEBRATIONS AND THE SLAUGHTER OF SOULS - FANI KAYODE

On 26th February 2014 one Mr. Adegoroye wrote "only an insane government will be celebrating centenary while the youths, women, children and citizens are being killed daily in cold blood. Rather than mourn the dead, we want to celebrate one hundred years of a failed state ruled by a failed and cursed generation. This country (Nigeria) needs more than just prayers if the government will be unable, for just twenty four hours, to protect the citizens. Who says we don't have a war situation in Nigeria? Oh! Families of the pained and the dead should celebrate too? Why not invite them all to Abuja to come and dance and entertain you? Shame has only one definition - shame!".

These are deep and powerful words and the rage, frustration and despair that fuels them reflects the thinking of many. Mr. Joseph Tobi Daniel drove home the point when, on the same day, he used his twitter handle to ask "what kind of leader focuses on a centenary celebration when the souls of slaughtered children are crying out for justice?"

Millions of Nigerians would like an answer to that question and they were utterly appalled as they watched our President glibly delivering his centenary broadcast speech on national television the night of 25th February 2014 where he extolled the so-called virtues of 100 years of our national existence. And as he spoke more innocent people were being slaughtered. Yet the concerns did not stop there.

Government officials are continuously devising means of stealing public funds. Read the following report by Premium Times.

It appears a new kind of fraud in Nigeria. A contract was duly awarded by government to some private firms. But when it was time to make payment for job done, the N3.538billion contract sum was diverted to an entirely different set of companies.

The companies which received payment did not bid for the jobs, were not awarded the contract and are not known to have offered any service. The firms which offered service but have now been deprived their legitimate earnings are now crying foul.
