OVER 50 KILLED AS SUICIDE BOMBER ATTACKS MOSQUE IN MUBI, ADAMAWA STATE, NIGERIA.

At least 50 people lost their lives at a mosque in Mubi Town, Adamawa State on Tuesday morning when a suicide bomber blew himself/herself up. The sex of the attacker is yet to be ascertained. This is the biggest mass killing this year in a region facing an insurgency by Islamist militant group Boko Haram.

The death toll could increase as many survivors are being treated in the hospital, some in critical condition. Mubi is in Adamawa state where Boko Haram militants held territory in 2014, although the insurgents were pushed out of those areas by troops in early 2015.

In recent times, Boko Haram has deployed the strategy of suicide attacks in crowded public places such as mosques and markets. This attack is the highest loss of life since 56 people were killed in the same state last December 2016, when two schoolgirl suicide bombers killed 56 people and wounded dozens more in a coordinated attack on a crowded market.

Boko Haram has waged an insurgency in northeast Nigeria since 2009 in its attempt to create an Islamic state in the region, killing more than 20,000 and forcing around 2 million people to flee their homes.

Most attacks by the group focus on Borno state, the birthplace of the insurgency. The terror group
was active in Borno, Adamawa and Yobe states until early 2015 but were forced out by Nigeria’s army backed by troops from neighboring countries.
