16 PEOPLE BURNED ALIVE IN EGYPT AS ANGRY EMPLOYEE WHO WAS FIRED THREW MOLOTOV COCKTAIL INTO RESTAURANT.

A Molotov cocktail hurled into a Cairo restaurant killed 16 people and injured three others today, Egyptian security officials said.

The attacker was an employee who had been fired from the restaurant in the Agouza area in the centre of the Egyptian capital, an official revealed.

Victims of the blast were burned to death or died from smoke inhalation. The restaurant, also a nightclub, was located in a basement and offered no escape route, it has been reported.

Conflicting reports say police are looking for two young men who carried out the attack because they were not allowed to enter.

The Ministry of Interior, in a statement posted on its Facebook page, cited an unnamed official with its Security Information Center who said a preliminary investigation showed the attack happened after a dispute between staff and others, who then threw Molotov cocktails at the entrance.

A video published by Youm 7 newspaper shows thick black smoke pouring through the doorway of El Sayad restaurant.

The fire was reportedly extinguished quickly and security authorities are investigating the attack.

Separate reports claim the attack followed a dispute between employees of the venue and a group of youths.

Islamist militants have claimed a number of bombing and shooting attacks in Egypt.

They have mostly been against members of the security forces since the army toppled President Mohamed Mursi of the Muslim Brotherhood in 2013 after mass protests.
