Current Miss Honduras who was declared missing about a week ago has been found dead along with her sister, following their disappearing after a birthday party.
María José Alvarado, 19, an IT graduate, and her 23-year-old sister Sofia Trinidad, a primary school teacher, were last seen on November 13.
The hunt for the pair has dominated the news in Honduras, as María José was due to travel to London on November 19 to represent her country at the Miss World contest.
"We can confirm that the bodies found were the two young sisters, who have been buried in the Cablotales area of Santa Barbara," said Leandro Osorio, head of the National Directorate of Criminal Investigation.
He added that the bodies had been located at the mouth of a river in the La Arada area, near Santa Barbara - a town in the centre of the country.
Mr Osorio added that a they had detained Plutarco Ruiz, boyfriend of Sofia Trinidad, as the suspected "author" of the crime. They had also arrested a second man, Aris Valentin Maldonado.
They have also found the murder weapon, and the vehicle which took the bodies to be buried, Mr Osorio said.
The mother of the Alvarado sisters, Teresa de Jesús Muñoz Torres, had been pleading for their safe return.
"I'm asking the authorities to do all they can to rescue them alive," she told Honduran newspaper El Tiempo.
"I have faith in the Lord that he will bring them home to me, safe and sound. They always went out to parties and came home again."
She said that ever since María José was a little girl she had wanted to take part in beauty contests - a big part of Central American culture.
"Ever since she was little she loved watching the beauty parades, and I always sat down with my three daughters to watch the competitions on television.
"She told me: 'One day, I will be Miss Honduras.'"
