TROUBLE FOR PROSPECTIVE CAR OWNERS AS PRICES IS SET TO RISE BY 60%

Prospective car owners will cough out more than budgeted sum to own tokunbo vehicles as from next year as the FG released the details of new duties and levies payable on imported new and used vehicles as well as imported new tyres from next year, raising the tariff from 20 per cent to 70 per cent.

Dealers of imported vehicles estimated that the new rate would translate into an increase of 60 per cent on imported cars. The Federal Executive Council had last month approved a new national automotive policy aimed at encouraging local production and assembling of new vehicles with an imposition of a high import tariff on fully built vehicles. But the new rate was not given then.

A two-page document dated November 14, 2013 and signed by the Minister of Finance, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, gave the new import tariff on cars as 70 per cent (of the cost of each vehicle). It stated that a fully built car would attract a duty of 35 per cent and a levy of another 35 per cent of the cost of the vehicle.

PAY OUR SALARY ARREARS & WE WILL CALL OFF THE STRIKE - ASUU

The Academic Staff Union of Universities has said it will  suspend its ongoing strike  when the four months salaries owed its members are paid. The union also wants the immediate implementation of the N1.2tn offer by the Federal Government to public universities, starting with the release of N100bn this year. The balance of N1.1tn is to be spread over five years from 2014.

These were some of the resolutions reached by members of the National Executive Council of the union who converged on Kano on Friday to deliberate on whether to call off the over four- month-old industrial action or not. A source, who was privy to the resolutions  reached during the President Goodluck Jonathan – ASUU leadership meeting three weeks ago, said that  the fresh demands were some of the issues to be tabled before Jonathan by  the leadership  during their next meeting. A date for the meeting is yet to be fixed.

THE BATTLE BETWEEN DUCHESS OF CAMBRIDGE AND THE WIND

There is a time and a place for a ‘Marilyn moment’. But it’s certainly not when you’re a member of the Royal Family trying to look dignified in front of the assembled media.

The Duchess of Cambridge made headlines for all the wrong reasons this week when a rogue gust of wind blew up her pleated skirt as she arrived at a children’s charity event. It is not the first time the Duchess’s hemlines have caused her trouble. It happened twice on her first official visit to Canada, where she all but flashed a glimpse of her underwear at Calgary airport after her Jenny Packham dress made a bid for freedom.

SEXUAL OFFENCES BILL

The Senate has acted responsibly by taking a step further towards making legislation that is focused on checking sexual offences in Nigeria.

We welcome the support senators gave the Sexual Offences Bill when it was presented for second reading at the Senate. Coming at a time when sexual crimes are rapidly increasing, the successful outing of the bill gives hope that our lawmakers are sensitive to the safety, security, and well-being of Nigerians, especially women and children who suffer the most sexual offences.

GRADUATES JOSTLE FOR UNIFORM JOBS

The state of joblessness in Nigeria today will make a graduate seek any kind of employment as long as he/she can be sustained by same.

When Olamide Lawal graduated from the university with a second class upper degree in Accounting two years ago, his parents threw a big party for him and prayed that he would soon get a “lucrative bank job” or one in an oil company that will set his financial future on the right path.

But three years later, Mr Lawal did not get any kind of job. The bank jobs were too competitive and he never got past an aptitude test. The oil companies seemed to elude him and didn’t respond to any of his applications. After chasing his dreams for three years, he settled for a job in the Nigerian Immigrations Service and now wears a uniform to work everyday.

LIST OF THE 32 QUALIFIERS FOR BRAZIL 2014

JTF IS INVOLVED IN THE NIGER DELTA OIL THEFT

Well, this is not a surprise as it is virtually impossible for the country to be losing so much crude oil to theft without the involvement of powerful people. I had told a friend during our discussion that security operatives in the Niger Delta region, major oil players and government officials all have a hand in this crisis.

Jonathan has failed to declare a state of emergency in that industry despite the huge revenue the nation is losing daily for obvious reasons.................. 2015 is around the corner........ Hope you can put the pieces of the puzzle together................

SENATORS SEEK LIFE IMPRISONMENT FOR RAPISTS

The Nigeria Senate, yesterday, called for stiffer punishment like life imprisonment for perpetrators of sexual assault in the country.

Some Senators also canvassed for capital punishment in the Sexual Offence Bill sponsored by Senator Chris Anyanwu, which passed the second reading.

Senator Anyanwu, APGA, Imo had in her lead debate, said her bill chronicled incidents of high rate of immorality in the society and demanded the creation of a unit within the Nigerian Police Force where trained professionals would ensure the preservation of the rights of humanity.

She noted that sex tourism has been on the increase in the country and that it was imperative to create a unit in the Nigeria Police Force to handle such cases with good training, as she alleged that most times victims that take their matter to the police are always ridiculed by the police officers handling the matter.

She further said that the bill makes provision for those who make false allegations or accusations of rape as it touches on fundamental human rights and human dignity and urged the senate to support the passage of the law to save the womanhood.

According to her, there were punishments stipulated in the penal code of states in the federation but said that deficiency in extant laws was being corrected in her bill including protection of witnesses and stigma of victims.

She said the establishment of a section of the police force manned by well trained investigators who will handle the matters with passion, would reduce rape incidents to its barest minimum.
