ASARI DOKUBO'S WAR THREAT IS UNACCEPTABLE.

ASARO DOKUBO
Many Nigerians are wondering why the Ex-militant and kidnapper, Asari Dokubo, has not been arrested for threatening war against the nation.

Taking impunity to a new level, some ex-Niger Delta militants, joined by some intemperate public officials, gathered in Yenagoa, the Bayelsa State capital, last week to declare war against Nigeria in advance, should President Goodluck Jonathan lose next month’s presidential election. While disdain for law and order is not totally unexpected from pardoned ex-insurgents, the participation of Governor Seriake Dickson and a presidential adviser, Kingsley Kuku, in that provocative conclave is doubly unacceptable and should warrant a response from the government.

The bravado was shocking. According to news reports, the ex-militants, featuring some ex-warlords, vowed to take up arms against the country if Jonathan lost the February 14 presidential election. They also threatened reprisals for attacks on the President’s campaign team and vehicles in some northern states. Asari Dokubo, who has repeatedly trodden this path, urged attendees to get ready for war: “This action is calling the Niger Delta youths to war.”

APPLES POSTED BEST QUARTER IN CORPORATE HISTORY. SOLD 74.5 MILLION PHONES IN 3 MONTHS.

Apple posted the biggest profit in corporate history last quarter after selling a record number of iPhones.  Apple (AAPL, Tech30) sold 74.5 million iPhones in the last three months. That helped Apple's profit soar more than 37% to $18 billion. That's larger than Gazprom's $16.2 billion profit during the first quarter of 2011 -- the previous profit record posted by a corporation.

Apple also posted a stunning $74.6 billion in sales, up nearly 30% from the same period last year. That's not close to a global corporate record, but it's the best quarterly revenue Apple ever posted.

"Interest in Apple products is at an all time high ... shattering our high expectations," said CEO Tim Cook on a conference call with analysts. "This volume is hard to comprehend."

BADDO GIRL KILLS LOVER OVER UNFULFILLED PROMISES.

The social media space is useful for many obvious reasons but also dangerous if caution is not employed. The dangers people are exposed to is not tailored to the Nigerian society only.

Though many people have used the social network to connect positively, the story of Cynthia Osokogwu who was killed in Lagos State by her Facebook friend in July 2012 sent shivers down the spine of everyone who heard the sad story.

But it seems as if some users of social networks are yet to grasp the lessons of their usage, as another young man recently fell victim when a lady he connected with on Badoo network murdered him in cold blood over what she tagged “unfulfilled promises.”

PLEASE READ: BUHARI VS JONATHAN: BEYOND THE ELECTION BY CHARLES SOLUDO.

I need to preface this article with a few clarifications. I have taken a long sabbatical leave from partisan politics, and it is real fun watching the drama from the balcony.  Having had my own share of public service (I do not need a job from government), I now devote my time and energy in pursuit of other passions, especially abroad.

A few days ago, I read an article in Thisday entitled “Where is Charles Soludo?”, and my answer is that I am still there, only that I have been too busy with extensive international travels to participate in or comment on our national politics and economy. But I occasionally follow events at home. Since the survival and prosperity of Nigeria are at stake, the least some of us (albeit, non-partisan) must do is to engage in public debate. As the elections approach, I owe a duty to share some of my concerns.

PORTRAIT OF A GENERAL.

Is General Muhammadu Buhari driven by nationalist ideals or crass opportunism in his repeated quest to serve Nigeria as a civilian Head of State? That question has become imperative in view of the unique record he now holds as the only Nigerian to have contested the nation’s number one seat on four consecutive occasion, counting the forthcoming February 14 election. General Buhari challenged former President Olusegun Obasanjo in 2003; contested against the late Umaru Yar’Adua in 2007, slugged it out with President Goodluck Jonathan in 2011 and is on the prowl again in 2015. He is 72.

On each of the three occasions Buhari had contested the presidency, he had lost, failing to make incursions into the Southern parts of the country, even when he maintained some level of popularity in the core North. In the 2015 experience so far, his supporters have been upbeat that with the alliance between the core Northern political parties and that of the party with strong showing in the South West, the coast could be clearer for the general. There is no doubt that things don’t work in that simplistic manner. But what are the qualities that recommend Buhari as a patriot, nationalist and a leader the people can trust.

MIDDLESBROUGH TEACHES MANCHESTER CITY A FATAL LESSON. #FACUP

Manchester City have been knocked out of the FA Cup. Middlesbrough inflicted the massive blow on Pellegrini's side in a two nil defeat.

The giants are falling as Chelsea also lost at home to Bradford.

BRADFORD HUMILIATES CHELSEA AT STAMFORD BRIDGE. (CHELSEA 2 BRADFORD 4). #FACUP

There are no words. How do you even begin to start reporting what happened at Stamford Bridge.
If you think the English FA Cup is dead, an after thought; you are wrong. Hugely wrong.

Two goals down against one of the most expensively-assembled squads in Europe, Bradford staged one of the biggest FA Cup giant-killings of all time, leaving Chelsea with a 4-2 win.

Jon Stead, Filipe Morais, Andy Halliday and Mark Yeates – Bradford's goalscorers – will be granted permanent membership into FA Cup folklore. But every player played their part. All heroes.

WHAT IS NEXT AFTER BUHARI'S CERTIFICATE SAGA?????????????

Following the seeming resolution of the issues surrounding the educational qualification of the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Maj-Gen Muhammadu Buhari (retd), the prospect of redirecting the campaign to core issues remains a variable for the political gladiators.

Democarcy is all about freedom and any democracy without it is not democracy,” President Goodluck Jonathan said from the political podium last Wednesday in Dutse, Jigawa State as he sought to change the tune of the campaign after the certificate saga surrounding the man in hot pursuit for his job seemed to have cleared up.

The president’s words were apparently reflective of the fact that the credibility question which his campaign team had tried to stamp on Muhammadu Buhari, the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC may have fallen flat.

Buhari and his close associates had derisively dismissed questions about his certificate after two newspapers had reported that he only submitted an affidavit in lieu of his secondary school certificate.

Campaign spokesman
Jonathan’s foot soldiers, notably his campaign spokesman, Femi Fani-Kayode had led the charge against Buhari questioning the qualification of the APC candidate to stand for the polls.

Buhari’s decision to ignore the allegation that he did not possess a secondary school certificate and the defence put up by some of his handlers including a member of the APC presidential screening committee that the constitution only required proof of a secondary school education, only lured Jonathan’s handlers to draw for blood.

And they were swift in moving in on with their seeming prey.

“It is disingenuous for Buhari to say that he contested previous elections and that the issue of his qualifications did not arise,” Fani-Kayode said in a statement last Monday.

“The fact that he got away with it in 2003, 2007 and 2011 does not make it right. The minimum that Nigerians require from Buhari is the presentation of his secondary school certificate which enabled him to gain admission into the Nigerian Military College in 1962 and on which basis he became a commissioned officer of the Nigerian Army.

“As long as he cannot produce that secondary school certificate, we believe that he is not qualified to run for the Presidency of Nigeria,” Fani-Kayode pressed on.

The matter for Buhari was further exacerbated when the outgoing director of army public relations, Brigadier-General Olajide Laleye addressed a press conference where he claimed that in response to public concerns that the army had decided to release all details of the credentials as concerning Buhari.

He disclosed that there was no evidence that Buhari ever submitted a certificate in the course of his admission noting almost derisively that what Buhari had was a notice from his principal in 1961 that the candidate was of good character and was in position to pass his papers.

“Neither the original copy, Certified True Copy, CTC, nor statement of result of Major General Muhammadu Buhari’s WASC result is in his personal file. What I have said here is what is contained in his service records’ personal file. We have not added or subtracted anything,” the army spokesman said.

Remarkably, his action was without the prompting of the affected officer, that is, Buhari, a development that raised concern in the polity that the army may have taken a partisan support against the former head of state. The APC was swift in responding to the assertion by the army as it noted that the institution was being manipulated for political ends.

If blood was bleeding, the action of the army spokesman turned the cut into a gush.

The army’s revelation came on the day that Buhari had a very successful rally that practically grounded Kano. The revelation was almost turning the success in Kano into a sour.

Many who had been following the issue, however, did not know that a few days before the army’s claim, Buhari had himself made an application to his former school for the statement of his result and the application which ordinarily should have been honoured within a day, however, took days to be approved.

Serious issue
For what reason, no one could say especially as Buhari’s old school, Katsina Provincial College, now Government Secondary School, Katsina is under the control of a PDP government.

By Tuesday evening after much effort had been put to get the statement of result from the present school, word emerged that Buhari was to speak on the matter the following day.

And when he spoke, he cleared the air on the issue saying that it was for him something he would ordinarily have ignored given what he claimed as the more serious issues affecting the country.

He said: “I only consented to address you this morning because of the genuine concern expressed by many supporters and other well-meaning Nigerians that the issue be addressed. Otherwise, I would have dismissed it for what it is—sheer mischief— and would not have considered it an issue worth the nation’s while.”

“I had assumed all along that all my records were in the custody of the Military Secretary of the Nigerian Army. Much to my surprise, we are now told that although a record of the result is available, there are no copies of the certificates in my personal file. This is why I formally requested my old school, the Provincial Secondary School, Katsina (which is now known as Government College, Katsina) to make available the school’s copy of the result of the Cambridge/West African School Certificate. This will be made available to the press the moment this is available.

“And although the ruling party may want to wish this away, the issue in this campaign cannot be my certificate which I obtained 53 years ago. The issues are the scandalous level of unemployment of millions of our young people, the state of insecurity, the pervasive official corruption which has impoverished our people and the lack of concern of the government for anything other than the retention of power at all costs.”

It was thus remarkable that after producing his certificate that the president who also campaigned in Kano the same day that Buhari spoke to the press in Kano sought to direct the campaign towards the issue of liberty which he insinuated would be better protected under him than Buhari.

Fani-Kayode was, however, unrelenting even after Buhari had produced the result. In a statement following the Kano press conference, Jonathan’s spokesman asked Buhari to withdraw from the presidential contest on the basis of alleged perjury saying that Buhari lied on oath when he earlier claimed that his certificate was with the military board.

That assertion has been dismissed by Buhari’s associates who infer monkey business saying that it was surprising that Buhari who was a former military secretary would have known if his records were not complete.

Critics of the APC presidential candidate were also looking for ways to pummel the APC candidate as they examined every detail of the statement issued by the school. Among issues being raised by these critics are that the first name in the result sheet is Mohammed and not Muhammadu as the presidential candidate is widely known as.

But Buhari and his associates were themselves dismissive of such as they urged the president and his campaign team to go back to what they referred to as the core issues of the campaign.

IRATE YOUTHS ATTACK PRESIDENT JONATHAN IN BAUCHI.

President Goodluck Jonathan’s re-election campaign in Bauchi on Thursday turned violent when some thugs who converged at the Ibrahim Babangida Square, venue of the event, hurled shoes, plastic water bottles and other objects at the canopy where the president and members of his campaign team were delivering their speeches.

Although security operatives intervened to stop the thugs from disrupting the event, several vehicles coming out of the venue, belonging to the PDP presidential campaign team, were stoned while tyres were burnt.

The violent youth also clashed with security personnel deployed around Ran road and the Bauchi central market where a police patrol van was set ablaze by irate youths.

NATIONAL SECURITY ADVISER WANTS INEC TO POSTPONE THE ELECTIONS AS APC KICKS.

The National Security Adviser, Col. Sambo Dasuki(retd.), has canvassed the postponement of next month’s elections to give the Independent National Electoral Commission time to distribute over 30 million outstanding Permanent Voter Cards to registered voters.

Dasuki, according to Reuters, said he had told the INEC Chairman, Prof. Attahiru Jega,   that a postponement within the three months allowed by the law, would be a good idea.

But his advice was rejected by the electoral umpire and the opposition All Progressives Congress.

BUHARI FORGED HIS CERTIFICATE - FEMI FANI KAYODE

The Peoples Democratic Party Presidential Campaign Organisation alleged on Thursday that the school certificate presented by the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Maj. Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), was forged.

The Director of Media and Publicity of the organisation, Chief Femi Fani-Kayode, made the allegation at a press conference in Abuja.

He, however, added that the organisation had yet to contact the school that issued the certificate to either confirm or deny its authenticity.

I AM NOT SORRY FOR THE ADVERTORIAL - AYO FAYOSE.

Ekiti State Governor, Mr Peter Ayodele Fayose have reacted to certain negative comments that trailed the advertorial he caused to be published on the front pages of Punch and Sun newspapers of last Monday, saying that he has no apology over the advertorial as it contained facts.

Fayose who stated this through his Chief Press Secretary, Mr Idowu Adelusi in Ado Ekiti on Tuesday said that the truth can never be covered indefinitely, insisting that the All Progressive Congress (APC) Presidential Candidate, General Buhari was too old and sick to be president of this country.
