NIGERIA'S ACCOUNTANT-GENERAL & NAICOM FINGERED IN ALLEGED RECORD BREAKING FRAUD OF N3.54B - PREMIUM TIMES

Government officials are continuously devising means of stealing public funds. Read the following report by Premium Times.

It appears a new kind of fraud in Nigeria. A contract was duly awarded by government to some private firms. But when it was time to make payment for job done, the N3.538billion contract sum was diverted to an entirely different set of companies.

The companies which received payment did not bid for the jobs, were not awarded the contract and are not known to have offered any service. The firms which offered service but have now been deprived their legitimate earnings are now crying foul.

WHY WE HONOURED ABACHA - FG

The Nigerian government on Friday said although late General Sani Abacha’s regime was one of the most controversial in Nigeria’s history, the military dictator deserved to be honoured.

The government also explained why Mr. Abacha, Nigeria’s military dictator from 1993 to 1998, was among those who received the centenary award for 100 Nigerians. The government stated this position in the awardees’ brochure where a brief citation was written for each recipient and reasons given why he or she deserved the award.

HORROR IN CHINA AS KNIFE WIELDING MEN ATTACK TRAIN STATION KILLING 28 AND INJURING 113.

At least 28 people have been killed and 113 injured after a group of knife-wielding men hacked their way through innocent people at one of China's busiest railway stations.

Distressing photos circulating online showed bodies, pools of blood and abandoned luggage scattered across the terminal floor at Kunming Railway Station in Yunnan province.

Authorities described the incident at about 9.20pm local time (1.20pm GMT) as an 'organised, premeditated, violent terrorist attack' in which at least 10 people stabbed commuters outside the station terminal before moving inside.

THE CANONISATION OF TERROR - WOLE SOYINKA

The sheer weight of indignation and revulsion of most of Nigerian humanity at the recent Boko Haram atrocity in Yobe is most likely to have overwhelmed a tiny footnote to that outrage, small indeed, but of an inversely proportionate significance.  This was the name of the hospital to which the survivors of the massacre were taken. That minute detail calls into question, in a gruesome but chastening way, the entire ethical landscape into which this nation has been forced by insensate leadership.  It is an uncanny coincidence, one that I hope the new culture of ‘religious tourism’, spearheaded by none other than the nation’s president in his own person, may even come to recognize as a message from unseen forces.

For the name of that hospital, it is reported, is none other than that of General Sanni Abacha, a vicious usurper under whose authority the lives of an elected president and his wife were snuffed out.  Assassinations – including through bombs cynically ascribed to the opposition – became routine. Under that ruler, torture and other forms of barbarism were enthroned as the norm of governance.  To round up, nine Nigerian citizens, including the writer and environmentalist Ken Saro-wiwa, were hanged after a trial that was stomach churning even by the most primitive standards of judicial trial, and in defiance of the intervention of world leadership. We are speaking here of a man who placed this nation under siege during an unrelenting reign of terror that is barely different from the current rampage of Boko Haram. It is this very psychopath that was recently canonized by the government of Goodluck Jonathan in commemoration of one hundred years of Nigerian trauma.

BETWEEN SANUSI AND THE POWERS-THAT-BE - FANI KAYODE

Mallam Sanusi Lamido Sanusi is not my favourite person and I have differences with him on many issues. I must, however, commend his immense courage for speaking out and exposing the monumental corruption in the government that he once served as CBN Governor and that has now decided that they no longer require his services.

Two weeks ago, he claimed that 20 billion US dollars had gone missing from the coffers of the NNPC. Today, he has been suspended and relieved of his duties for exposing the rot and speaking the truth. I have little doubt that the next thing that will happen is that he will be subjected to a formal probe and the EFCC will be called in to investigate his tenure of office. They will throw everything that they have got at him including the kitchen sink simply because he refused to play ball with them and cover up their penchant for monumental corruption and graft.

WHY I REJECTED THE CENTENARY AWARD - WOLE SOYINKA.

Professor Wole Soyinka, the Nobel laureate, said he rejected Nigeria’s centenary award bestowed on him because of the inclusion on the honours list of the late Nigerian tyrant, General Sani Abacha and other known killers and looters of Nigeria’s treasury.

In a rejection note headlined ”The Canonisation of Terror”, Soyinka observed that the inclusion of Abacha on the list does not only show a failure of a moral rigour but it calls into question ”the entire ethical landscape into which this nation has been forced by insensate leadership”.

He reminded those who have forgotten so soon that General Sani Abacha was a vicious usurper under whose authority the lives of an elected president and his wife—M.K.O and Kudirat Abiola— were snuffed out.

A Kremlin spokesman said Russia "will not disregard" Crimean Premier Sergey Aksyonov's request for help "in maintaining peace and accord in Crimea."

Aksyonov, who was installed as the region's premier after armed men took over the Crimean parliament building Thursday, said security forces "are unable to efficiently control the situation in the republic," in comments broadcast on Russian state channel Russia 24.

ENDLESS BLOODSHED IN THE NORTH YET JONATHAN WEARS A SMILE PRETENDING THAT ALL IS WELL.

TRAGEDIES and disasters come with pains and grief; but they are also events that unite a nation. When a country is afflicted by the twin evils, especially on the scale experienced in Nigeria in recent times, it draws the grief-stricken people together and provides a perfect setting for the leadership to reconnect with them. It is an opportunity for the leader to share in the pains of those affected; it is time for him to attempt to restore hope to the disillusioned, those who may have come to the conclusion that there is nothing to live for anymore.

Nigeria, in the past few years, has had her fair share of tragic events. Since the blood-thirsty terrorist group called Boko Haram started its campaign of terror in the north-eastern part of the country, thousands of people have been killed in very gruesome circumstances. In some instances, whole villages have been levelled. And, almost of equal ferocity have been the frequent attacks and the loss of lives witnessed in Plateau State. It could, therefore, be excused when reports of fresh attacks in those areas no longer attract the attention they used to, perhaps due to their frequency.
