TRAIN CHOPS OFF PASSENGER'S HAND IN LAGOS

Tragedy struck in Lagos, yesterday, when a passenger hanging on a train coach had his hand chopped off by the moving train.

According to eye witnesses, the incident occurred at Oshodi around 9 a.m. when the victim, who was simply identified as Ernest, allegedly fell from the moving train which had a hitch in movement.

An eye witness, Mr Olu Atoyebi, said Ernest fell from the moving train while his hand was stuck in between  the coaches resulting to the hand being chopped off. His shout for help was said to have attracted sympathisers who rushed to the scene to offer assistance. Ernest who was said to be conscious at that time, asked the sympathisers to reach out for his phone and invite his relations to take him to the hospital.

Atoyebi blamed the victim for the tragedy, saying there have been campaigns by the government against such act. ‘’The government had been campaigning against hanging on the coach but many passengers are adamant and they will have themselves to blame in case of eventuality,’’ he said.

NEW PARAMILITARY FORCE RAISES SUSPICION

For Lagos residents who live or have their offices close to the old toll gate in the city, the presence of some young men and ladies, dressed in black T-shirts and black trousers, have become a familiar sight. Holding paramilitary parade almost on a daily basis has become a norm to them.

But who are these people? This is the question now bothering the minds of many people.

Some residents have described them as the Federal Road Maintenance Agency Task Force. But in a swift reaction to a news report, FERMA South West 2 Coordinator, Mr. Oladipo Fagbamila, said the agency has no link with the task force.

POLICE ARE WRONG ON PERMIT FOR RALLIES

HAS the rule of law been suspended in Nigeria? No. Yet, the rampant disregard for the laws of the land in Rivers State by the former Police Commissioner, Joseph Mbu, points to the law of the jungle rather than the rule of law. Mbu, who had a running battle with Governor Rotimi Amaechi for most of 2013, took impunity to an alarming level just before he was redeployed last week after he announced a ban on rallies in the state, citing an “increase in political tension.” He was wrong.

Disquietingly, there seems to be a pattern to this police encroachment on the Executive’s territory. A week before Mbu’s clearly illegal and disdainful order, some senior police officers insisted that Nigerians must secure permits from the force before holding rallies. Among them is Tambari Muhammad Yabo, an Assistant Inspector-General of Police. Yabo prefers to rely on a strange Appeal Court ruling from Ilorin, Kwara State. The court inexplicably countermanded an earlier verdict by the Court of Appeal, Abuja that invalidated the Public Order Act (CAP P42) of 1990 Laws of the Federation. “As a police officer, I’ve the right to choose between the two judgements,” he cheekily said. It is obvious that the police, who have become a political instrument – instead of being the people’s police – are central in the unfolding saga. Who will cut them to size and save our democracy from anarchy?

OBASANJO & APC LEADERS WANTED ME TO ROT IN BENIN JAIL - ASARI DOKUBO

He specifically alleged that Mr. Obasanjo plotted his arrest recently in the Republic of Benin, when he (Obasanjo) sent his name alongside others to the INTERPOL, asking it to arrest and detain the neighboring West African country.

OIL REVENUE LEAKAGES - EL RUFAI

The Presidential Economic Team of 2003 to 2007 which I was privileged to be a member had a running joke - that the NNPC was an independent federal republic on its own totally separate from and way superior to the Nigeria we all worked for! This joke was our way of criticizing the way and manner the NNPC not only sells crude oil as an agent on behalf of the government of the federation as in its enabling law, but even then felt entitled to spend as much of the proceeds of sale as it deemed fit.

The NNPC had begun then to be a law unto itself, outside our national laws and above the constitution, hence our joke. Recent revelations of oil revenue leakages have confirmed that this is a joke that has turned into a macabre reality. Our nation's finances are in grave danger of becoming zero due to the conduct of a rogue institution that has become more powerful than its principal under Jonathan's watch.

TACKLING BAD BREATH

Halitosis, commonly known as bad breath, is a condition that can be prevented or treated. Halitosis, which is commonly known as bad breath, often causes embarrasment both privately and publicly.

“It’s a bit embarrassing when one is told his or her mouth smells. The average Nigerian doesn’t want to be embarrassed. But the oral hygiene habit of the average and educated Nigerian could be described as good. Often, most Nigerians try to abide by the rule of brushing their teeth twice daily,” said a dentist and health management consultant, Dr. Adeuga Adekuoye.

According to experts, halitosis is a condition caused by sulphur-producing bacteria that live within the surface of the tongue and in the throat. It is usually caused by an accumulation of bacteria in the mouth as a result of gum disease, food, or plaque. The condition could result from poor oral hygiene or dental health habits.

FIVE POLICE OFFICERS SLUMP AT IKEJA POLICE COLLEGE DURING PARADE

This post reminds me of a parade at the "Ungogo NYSC Camp - Kano State" where I served several years ago when more than 10 corpers fell like a mango tree during the parade. Punch reports that five police officers who couldn't bear the stress at a parade yesterdat fell and needed medical attention. Not strange though.

Five officers of the Nigeria Police Force slumped on Friday at the Police College, Ikeja, during a parade to mark the pulling out (retirement) of senior police officers.

The event, which lasted for about two hours, was held in honour of  seven  retiring officers, made up of two AIGs and five commissioners.
