SENATE PROPOSES 7-YRS JAIL TERM FOR SOCIAL MEDIA CRITICS

The Nigeria Senate is a very busy chamber, (the irony), as it currently seeks to clamp down on social media critics. Maybe this should ordinarily be the least of their worries as there are other several  issues demanding their attention including wage cut of public officers which they have not raised a bill for.

Criticism on Wednesday greeted the bill by the Senate seeking a seven-year jail term for social media critics found guilty of inciting the public against the Federal Government.

The controversial bill, which reportedly has scaled through the second reading in the upper legislative chamber, is also proposing a stiffer punishment for Internet fraudsters and scammers. Such swindlers will also face seven years imprisonment.

Section 13 sub-section 3 of the bill proposes, “Anyone, who intentionally propagates false information that could threaten the security of the country or that is capable of inciting the general public against the government through electronic message shall be guilty of an offence and upon conviction shall be sentenced to seven years imprisonment or N5m (fine).”

The Senate President, David Mark, represented by the Deputy Minority Whip, Senator Abu Ibrahim, (APC, Katsina), declared open the public hearing of the bill on Tuesday.

According to Mark, electronic fraudsters posed a great danger to the country and so there is the need to tackle their activities in order to attract foreign investment. The committee chairman Senator Umaru Dahiru (PDP, Sokoto), also noted that electronic fraud was a threat to world economies and Nigeria being a developing economy should enact appropriate laws to deal with the challenges.

Although the bill has yet to be enacted, for Nigerians on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram accounts, the consensus is that it simply amounts to an attempt to silence the voice of the people.

Already, social media perceptive Nigerians, who are not taking the lawmakers’ plan lightly, have swung into action to thwart what they described as plans by the government to silence the voice of the people.

Indeed, Victor Mbidi, a social media analyst, Online Editor and Presenter at Channels Television, hosted a G+ Hangout on Wednesday, where he urged Nigerians to share their thoughts on the “infamous” bill. The hangout, which was free and open to all, witnessed a large participation. It also featured live voice and video conversations.

PRESIDENT JONATHAN BURIES #ODUAHGATE REPORT AS MINISTER OF AVIATION PROMOTES "STELLAR" PROPAGANDA

President Goodluck Jonathan and Nigeria’s Aviation minister, Stella Oduah, who was recently caught in a scandalous and fraud-ridden purchase of two armored BMW cars, have begun a new round of propaganda, targeting Nigeria’s jobless and gullible youth, and aimed at portraying the minster as a “stellar performer.”

This comes as official reports in which the Minister was indicted have been tucked away by the president.

Ms. Oduah took a trip to Jigawa state on Monday and had an elaborate meeting with Governor Sule Lamido in Jigawa State, where she promised to complete an airport project. The trip was designed to please the northern part of the country where several critics have pointed out she has ignored airports and traveling passengers and refused to grant several Middle East-based airlines permission to fly into international airports in the area. Shortly after the scandal broke, the minister quickly approved some flight requests that were pending, and also increased the frequency of a few of them.

On Tuesday, the minister moved further on the new agenda, proclaiming at a Public Hearing of the House of Representatives Ad hoc Committee investigating the FCT Land Swap that she is setting up a “Nigeria Aetropolis” project that will employ 10 million Nigerians within two years and generate N100 billion in annual revenue.

According to a statement by Joe Obi, a special assistant to the Minister, Ms. Oduah told the Representatives that the project will be sited in Abuja and other major international airports across the country.

''The development of airport cities (aerotropolis) is a 21`st century phenomenon that is gaining ground all over the world. It is no longer fashionable to have an International Airport without the support facilities and amenities such as shopping arcades, hotels, packaging industries, Residential Estates, modern airline offices and recreational facilities. The proposed aerotropolis will definitely boost the Nigerian economy and generate the much-needed employment for our teeming youth.''

But people familiar with her propaganda say the claim the project will create 10 million jobs is not only dubious, it is not feasible either, especially under the ravenous quality of leadership shown by President Jonathan and Ms. Oduah.

WHY I REJECTED PDP'S N250,000.00 - "GO AND DIE" WIDOW

RECONCILED
The widow who was recently rebuked by Governor Adams Oshiomhole for blocking the road with her goods, Mrs Joy Ifijeh, says she snubbed the offer of N250,000 by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) because she was satisfied with the apology and offer of a job and N2 million by the governor.

Mrs Ifijeh said she is not ready to be used as a pawn by the PDP on the chessboard of politics, advising the party to give the money to another widow instead. She spoke yesterday during the presentation of her letter of appointment  into the Edo State War Against Indiscipline to her by Special Adviser to Governor Oshiomhole on Media and Public Affairs, Mr Kassim Afegbua, at the Government House in Benin City.

“I want to thank Oshiomhole sincerely for this appointment and I wish to state that I have forgiven him from the bottom of my heart. And for the money promised me by the PDP, let them give it to other widows. I do not need the money”, she said.

She described the governor’s gesture as humane and promised to support the government’s policies and programmes. Earlier, while presenting the appointment letter, Mr Kassim Afegbua said the appointment was in fulfilment of Oshiomhole’s promise to offer the widow an employment.

He said the appointment is effective from December 3, 2013.  It would be recalled that the state chapter of the PDP Tuesday launched an empowerment fund to cater for widows in the state in response to an alleged maltreatment of Joy Ifijieh by Governor Adams Oshiomhole.  Launching the programme, state chairman of the party, Chief Dan Orbih, said since the party posted the video clip of the governor’s encounter with the woman on Facebook and YouTube, public response was unprecedented, adding that N1 million was received by the party as a donation in support of Widows Empowerment Programme.  Chief Orbih described the state government offer of job and the sum of N2 million to Mrs Ifijieh after the video clip was made public, as a ‘Greek gift’.  He said the PDP’s effort in exposing what Governor Oshiomhole did to Mrs Ifijieh had started yielding results.

He condemned what he described as “pretentious actions of Governor Oshiomhole” during the presentation of the N2 million to the widow, saying the amount would remove the tears of widows in the state after the humiliation.  Chief Orbih, said the PDP was tired of a process whereby the governor would commit sins and waste state resources to pay for them.

PRESIDENT JONATHAN AND THE FIRST LADY ARE BOTH RECEIVING TREATMENT IN GERMANY

President Goodluck Jonathan and his wife, Patience Jonathan, checked in at a hospital in Germany on Wednesday

Last night, Mr. Jonathan had abruptly flown out of Abuja ostensibly to attend a Summit on peace and security in Africa that is organized by the French government. Several ministers and service chiefs accompanied the president to the airport for the late night flight, but only a handful of officials traveled on the actual flight.

A reliable source at the Presidency said that, contrary to the impression created that the trip was exclusively for the French-sponsored security summit, Mr. Jonathan and his wife will undergo tests and receive treatment in the same German hospital where his wife spent several months last year.

The source added that the Nigerian president had been feeling unwell since returning from a recent trip to London where he was hospitalized for a serious stomach-related ailment. SaharaReporters had disclosed that the president fell seriously ill after a bout of bingeing on alcohol in celebration of his birthday.

The source revealed that plans were made for the president to receive medical attention in Germany after Mr. Jonathan suddenly fell ill last weekend in his home-state of Bayelsa during a visit there. The president’s sudden illness almost led to his emergency evacuation to Germany.

Mrs. Jonathan is also expected to receive follow-up medical treatment in the German hospital. Mr. Jonathan is due in Paris for the summit billed for December 6th and 7th. But our source stated that Mr. Jonathan’s ability to make the trip will depend on the prognosis of his condition and the advice of the German doctors who will be treating him.

Mr. Jonathan has had recurring abdominal troubles in recent weeks. Mr. Jonathan is notorious as a heavy drinker of alcohol, especially strong spirits.

EX-MILITARY OFFICER KILLS SON OVER ELECTRICITY BILL IN ONDO STATE

Whatever could have made a father kill his own son is definitely beyond the ordinary. Read this touching crime report from SaharaReporters.

Tragedy struck yesterday at Maronu Street in the Araromi area of Akure, the capital of Ondo State, as a former military officer, Desilva Adedipe, reportedly shot and killed his son, Ayo Adedipe. Family sources told SaharaReporters that Mr. Adedipe, who retired from service at the rank of major, shot his son at close range as the two argued over an electricity bill.

A resident of the street told our correspondent that many residents fled the area for fear of their lives as well as possible arrest by security operatives. Our sources said that an argument broke out between the retired major and his son over payments for an electricity bill issued by the Power Holding Company of Nigerian (PHCN). One source said neighbors had tried to settle the matter between the two before the tragic incident.

A source said the former military officer’s son had verbally insulted his father. After a while, the ex-officer ran into his room and reemerged with a gun with which he shot his son in the chest at a close range. The young man died instantly.

AYOBAMI JAIYEOLA
Twenty Nine year old corps member, Ayobami Jaiyeola has been kidnapped in Lagos.

Ayobami she was last seen while leaving her elder sister’s house at Dideolu Estate in the Oniru area of the state in the evening of Friday last week.

A member of her family said “On Friday, she suddenly left the house and walked outside the main gate of the estate. We have not heard anything from her since then. ABOUT N500MILLION SPENT ON THE TREATMENT OF GOV SUNTAI

The SUNTAI drama goes on....................

Investigations by SaharaReporters reveal that poverty-plagued Taraba State has so far spent more than $1.2 million (close to N200 million) in ten months on the medical treatment of brain-injured Governor Danbaba Suntai. The state has also spent millions of naira more in security votes to the injured governor, estacode payments to him as well as members of Mr. Suntai’s inner circle, and transportation. The total cost to the state is close to half a billion naira, our investigative team discovered.

Mr. Suntai was injured in October, 2012 when a small plane he was piloting crashed near Yola Airport in Adamawa State. Mr. Suntai was attempting to land at the time of the accident.

After a brief stay at the National Hospital, Abuja, the injured governor was flown to a hospital in Germany. He was later transferred to the Johns Hopkins Hospital in the State of Maryland, the United States. After spending a few months there, he was admitted at a rehabilitation center for trauma patients in Staten Island, New York. He was flown back to Nigeria on August 25, 2013.

Several sources in Taraba State told our investigator that the funds spent on Mr. Suntai’s treatment were not documented as formal expenditure by the state government. Instead, the funds were either directly channeled into the personal account of one Aliyu Umar, a US-based friend of Mr. Suntai, or handed to the governor’s wife, Hauwa Suntai.

THE DEATH OF PROF FESTUS IYAYI - ACCIDENT OR ASSASSINATION?????

The nature of two holes on the late Professor Festus Iyayi’s body gives life to suspicions by his colleagues that he may have been shot.

Along with grief, anger will be the dominant emotion when Professor Festus Iyayi is buried this week in his hometown, Ugbegun in Edo State. The two feelings have mixed, predictably with unsavoury outcomes, since the former president of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, died on 12 November in an auto accident on the Lokoja-Abuja Expressway.

Iyayi was travelling to Kano in the company of three other ASUU members for a meeting on the ongoing strike by members of the union when a police escort van in the convoy of the Governor Idris Wada of Kogi State rammed into the bus the university teachers were travelling. Iyayi died instantly, while three his colleagues were seriously injured.

Wada, who was severely injured in an accident involving his convoy last year, was widely criticised by ASUU and the wider public for his failure to learn from his own experience and for allegedly failing to stop to assist the victims.

The escort vehicle was said to have veered off from its lane to hit the bus bearing the ASUU members, a claim the Kogi State government denied.

A report by Reuters quoted Forbes Africa’s Editor, Mr. Chris Bishop, as saying, “He is a man on a mission to help Africa feed itself.”

Adesina was chosen ahead of some of Africa’s most prominent businesspeople: Aliko Dangote and Jim Ovia, also from Nigeria; South Africa’s Patrice Motsepe; and Zimbabwe’s Strive Masiyiwa. The report notes that although the country is one of the world’s biggest oil exporters, most Nigerians live in poverty, especially in the rural areas.

The title of this post is a perfect question we seek an answer to as the rate of rape and choice of victim is becoming more alarming

A 19-year-old man, Usman Joshua, has been arrested by the police in Ado Ekiti for defiling a three-year-old girl. Joshua, who lives in the same building with the girl’s parents, was said to have lured her into his room with biscuit.

Her mother, Wuraola, said she noticed that her daughter was not feeling comfortable when she returned to their apartment by evening. A closer look by her mother showed that the little girl had been defiled. The girl allegedly told her mother that she was playing within the compound when Joshua told her to come and take biscuit.

Wuraola said, “I am the biological mother of Pelumi. On November 3, around 5.05pm, I saw my daughter outside with her pant almost falling off her body. I discovered that someone had poured sperm all over her body. I asked where she was coming from and she said it was one daddy that took her to his room.

STELLA DAMASUS WRITES AN EMOTIONAL LETTER TO LATE HUSBAND JAIYE ABODERIN

Nine years after the demise of Jaiye Aboderin, father of Stella Damasus' two children, the late celeb's wife wrote this touching post....

Wow! It's amazing how time flies. It's been nine years since you left us and it still feels like yesterday. I guess it's because I remember too many things and feel all the emotions like they just happened. I woke up this morning with thoughts and visions of you, wondering what you could be doing right now and the number of new friends and angels you would be chatting with now.

You were always the man of the people; who loved to put smiles on faces, especially mine.

I also wondered what and who you would expect me to be now. I wondered if I have done justice to at least a huge portion of all the plans we had together.

IHEANACHO WILL NOT BE PART OF MY WORLD CUP TEAM - STEPHEN KESHI

Stephen Keshi, head coach of the Super Eagles has heaped praise on Kelechi Iheanacho but admits there is little chance of him making the Super Eagles’ 2014 World Cup squad.

The impressive Kelechi Iheanacho was immense for Nigeria in their U17 World Cup triumph in the UAE, scoring six goals, assisting seven and winning the golden ball after being named the best player in the tournament. And while Keshi admits the youngster has been impressive at U/17 level, he is unsure as to whether Iheanacho would cope on the big stage should he be included in the squad for next year’s World Cup in Brazil.

“He is a fantastic player and he has very good qualities to become one of the best footballers in the world from his performance at the Under-17 World Cup,” Keshi told SuperSport. “But we need to ask if he is ready to play at the very highest level of football right now considering the weight of expectation that might follow such. “It should be recognised that the Under-17 tournament is a developmental phase for Kelechi and other players in that team.”

50-YR-OLD MAN RAPES 12-YR-OLD GIRL IN OSUN STATE

Osun State in the news again for the wrong reason as a 50-year-old man, Tajudeen Omole, has been arraigned before an Osogbo chief magistrate’s court for allegedly having carnal knowledge of a 12-year-old girl. The accused person was said to have committed the offence on November 27, 2013 at 1, Ikolaba, Osogbo, the capital of OsunState.

It was reliably gathered that the accused went to the house of the victim to ask after her sister who he claimed was his friend. The sister was not in the house and the accused cunningly lured the girl into her room where he allegedly defiled her. It was further gathered that although the girl attempted to scream for help, she was over powered. She, thereafter, reported the case to those she found around the house.
