EX-MILITARY OFFICER KILLS SON OVER ELECTRICITY BILL IN ONDO STATE

Whatever could have made a father kill his own son is definitely beyond the ordinary. Read this touching crime report from SaharaReporters.

Tragedy struck yesterday at Maronu Street in the Araromi area of Akure, the capital of Ondo State, as a former military officer, Desilva Adedipe, reportedly shot and killed his son, Ayo Adedipe. Family sources told SaharaReporters that Mr. Adedipe, who retired from service at the rank of major, shot his son at close range as the two argued over an electricity bill.

A resident of the street told our correspondent that many residents fled the area for fear of their lives as well as possible arrest by security operatives. Our sources said that an argument broke out between the retired major and his son over payments for an electricity bill issued by the Power Holding Company of Nigerian (PHCN). One source said neighbors had tried to settle the matter between the two before the tragic incident.

A source said the former military officer’s son had verbally insulted his father. After a while, the ex-officer ran into his room and reemerged with a gun with which he shot his son in the chest at a close range. The young man died instantly.

ABOUT N500MILLION SPENT ON THE TREATMENT OF GOV SUNTAI

The SUNTAI drama goes on....................

Investigations by SaharaReporters reveal that poverty-plagued Taraba State has so far spent more than $1.2 million (close to N200 million) in ten months on the medical treatment of brain-injured Governor Danbaba Suntai. The state has also spent millions of naira more in security votes to the injured governor, estacode payments to him as well as members of Mr. Suntai’s inner circle, and transportation. The total cost to the state is close to half a billion naira, our investigative team discovered.

Mr. Suntai was injured in October, 2012 when a small plane he was piloting crashed near Yola Airport in Adamawa State. Mr. Suntai was attempting to land at the time of the accident.

After a brief stay at the National Hospital, Abuja, the injured governor was flown to a hospital in Germany. He was later transferred to the Johns Hopkins Hospital in the State of Maryland, the United States. After spending a few months there, he was admitted at a rehabilitation center for trauma patients in Staten Island, New York. He was flown back to Nigeria on August 25, 2013.

Several sources in Taraba State told our investigator that the funds spent on Mr. Suntai’s treatment were not documented as formal expenditure by the state government. Instead, the funds were either directly channeled into the personal account of one Aliyu Umar, a US-based friend of Mr. Suntai, or handed to the governor’s wife, Hauwa Suntai.

THE DEATH OF PROF FESTUS IYAYI - ACCIDENT OR ASSASSINATION?????

The nature of two holes on the late Professor Festus Iyayi’s body gives life to suspicions by his colleagues that he may have been shot.

Along with grief, anger will be the dominant emotion when Professor Festus Iyayi is buried this week in his hometown, Ugbegun in Edo State. The two feelings have mixed, predictably with unsavoury outcomes, since the former president of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, died on 12 November in an auto accident on the Lokoja-Abuja Expressway.

Iyayi was travelling to Kano in the company of three other ASUU members for a meeting on the ongoing strike by members of the union when a police escort van in the convoy of the Governor Idris Wada of Kogi State rammed into the bus the university teachers were travelling. Iyayi died instantly, while three his colleagues were seriously injured.

Wada, who was severely injured in an accident involving his convoy last year, was widely criticised by ASUU and the wider public for his failure to learn from his own experience and for allegedly failing to stop to assist the victims.

The escort vehicle was said to have veered off from its lane to hit the bus bearing the ASUU members, a claim the Kogi State government denied.

STELLA DAMASUS WRITES AN EMOTIONAL LETTER TO LATE HUSBAND JAIYE ABODERIN

Nine years after the demise of Jaiye Aboderin, father of Stella Damasus' two children, the late celeb's wife wrote this touching post....

Wow! It's amazing how time flies. It's been nine years since you left us and it still feels like yesterday. I guess it's because I remember too many things and feel all the emotions like they just happened. I woke up this morning with thoughts and visions of you, wondering what you could be doing right now and the number of new friends and angels you would be chatting with now.

You were always the man of the people; who loved to put smiles on faces, especially mine.

I also wondered what and who you would expect me to be now. I wondered if I have done justice to at least a huge portion of all the plans we had together.

IHEANACHO WILL NOT BE PART OF MY WORLD CUP TEAM - STEPHEN KESHI

Stephen Keshi, head coach of the Super Eagles has heaped praise on Kelechi Iheanacho but admits there is little chance of him making the Super Eagles’ 2014 World Cup squad.

The impressive Kelechi Iheanacho was immense for Nigeria in their U17 World Cup triumph in the UAE, scoring six goals, assisting seven and winning the golden ball after being named the best player in the tournament. And while Keshi admits the youngster has been impressive at U/17 level, he is unsure as to whether Iheanacho would cope on the big stage should he be included in the squad for next year’s World Cup in Brazil.

“He is a fantastic player and he has very good qualities to become one of the best footballers in the world from his performance at the Under-17 World Cup,” Keshi told SuperSport. “But we need to ask if he is ready to play at the very highest level of football right now considering the weight of expectation that might follow such. “It should be recognised that the Under-17 tournament is a developmental phase for Kelechi and other players in that team.”

ENYEAMA SET TO BREAK RECORD IN FRANCE

Nigeria and Lille goalkeeper Vincent Enyeama will enter the record books if he can keep a clean sheet for just the first four minutes of his side’s match against Marseille on Tuesday. The Nigeria number one goalkeeper kept his 10th clean sheet in a row for the Ligue 1 side as they stayed second in the table thanks to a 1-0 win over Valenciennes on Saturday.

The 31-year-old has kept a remarkable 13 clean sheets in 15 matches so far this season, and needs only not to concede for the first four minutes of the match against Marseille to break the record of 948 minutes without conceding a goal. Interestingly, that record was set only a year ago, by Paris Saint-Germain keeper Salvatore Sirigu between November 17 2012 and February 8 2013.

But it could now be broken, with Enyeama having not conceded a goal for 945 minutes, since a 2-0 home defeat by Nice on September 15.

But despite the record chase, the player has been modest with his remarks on his current form. “I don’t count the minutes and I don’t let all the counting get into my head. My duty is to see that my team wins the game at stake,” Enyeama said last week after being named player of the month for the French league.

Enyeama was on Arsenal’s radar during the summer and in the early weeks of the season, with Gunners manager Arsene Wenger looking to bring in an understudy for Wojciech Szczesny, although Wenger has since appeared to cool his interest.

ROAD RAGE - HIT AND RUN DRIVER KILLS AND INJURES ONE IN LAGOS

A commercial bus driver, identified as Awe Idowu, killed two persons and injured another in a hit-and-run accident around Igi-Olugbin Road, Bariga area of Lagos State in Lagos on Saturday morning.

Eyewitnesses said it was like a horror movie. Idowu was said to have hit his first victim around Ladi-Lak, Bariga, but he refused to stop. Some commercial buses and motorcycle riders were said to have chased him and while he accelerated to avoid them, he crushed another motorcycle rider, Samson Akinwale, who was carrying a passenger around the Moshalashi Bus Stop. While the passenger had a cut to his cheek, 28-year-old Akinwale was said to have collapsed.

An electrician, Benjamin, who works opposite the scene of the incident, said he heard a loud bang and rushed out to see what had happened. He said, “It was around 11am. I heard a loud bang and rushed out of my shop to see what was happening. I saw that a commercial bus had hit an okada man (motorcyclist). The bus was half filled with passengers, while the okada man had a passenger at the back that had fallen to the ground. I saw that the okada rider was under the bus, blood gushing from his body. People were pouring water on him, to see if he could be revived, but he did not get up.

“The other man he was carrying only had a cut to his cheek. One of the passengers in the bus told me they had been warning the driver against reckless driving, but he didn’t listen to them.” The driver came down from the bus to see the extent of the damage, and on seeing Akinwale half dead, climbed into the vehicle, reversed and sped off again. Another eyewitness, who identified himself as Leke, said, “He drove through Moshalashi Street, and hit another pedestrian, breaking his leg in the process. He did not stop. It was when he got to Olorunkemi/Adifase junction when he was about to take a sharp bend that the bus fell into a ditch.
