OSUN GOVERNOR'S EDUCATION POLICY CLAIMS IT'S FIRST VICTIM

The South-West states in Nigeria are not known to be religiously intolerant as Christians & Muslims have lived together peacefully over the past decades unlike the Northern part of the country where thousands have been killed because of religious sentiments.. In fact, most families have a mix of both religions, but when  a Governor introduces an education policy that tends to change this balance, I bet the wise thing for him to do is to reverse his decision.

The new education policy in Osun State claimed its first casualty on Monday as fierce-looking Muslim youths invaded the Baptist High School, Ejigbo, and beat up the students and teachers. The principal of the school, Mr. Layi Oguntola, was thoroughly beaten and injured. Oguntola, as of the time of this report, was said to be receiving treatment at the Baptist Medical Centre, Ejigbo.

#ODUAHGATE - JONATHAN IS BACK, CONFIRMS RECEIPT OF ARMOURED CAR REPORT

President Goodluck Jonathan on Sunday said he has received the report of the three-member administrative panel of enquiry set up to probe the Aviation Minister, Stella Oduah’s role in the purchase of two bullet proof cars.

The President had in October instituted the panel to probe the procurement of two bullet proof cars by the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority, NCAA, under the directive of Mrs. Oduah. The two cars were allegedly bought for N225million. The panel was asked to investigate the minister’s role in the procurement and to determine if due process was followed in the procurement of the vehicles.

The three-member panel, chaired by the immediate former Head of Service of the Federation, Isa Bello, also has the National Security Adviser (NSA), Sambo Dakusi, and Dick Iruenebere as members. Speaking to State House correspondents on his arrival at the presidential wing of the Nnamdi Azikiwe Airport, Abuja, the president was silent on the state of the report or whether government had decided to act on it.

TROUBLE FOR PROSPECTIVE CAR OWNERS AS PRICES IS SET TO RISE BY 60%

Prospective car owners will cough out more than budgeted sum to own tokunbo vehicles as from next year as the FG released the details of new duties and levies payable on imported new and used vehicles as well as imported new tyres from next year, raising the tariff from 20 per cent to 70 per cent.

Dealers of imported vehicles estimated that the new rate would translate into an increase of 60 per cent on imported cars. The Federal Executive Council had last month approved a new national automotive policy aimed at encouraging local production and assembling of new vehicles with an imposition of a high import tariff on fully built vehicles. But the new rate was not given then.

A two-page document dated November 14, 2013 and signed by the Minister of Finance, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, gave the new import tariff on cars as 70 per cent (of the cost of each vehicle). It stated that a fully built car would attract a duty of 35 per cent and a levy of another 35 per cent of the cost of the vehicle.

PAY OUR SALARY ARREARS & WE WILL CALL OFF THE STRIKE - ASUU

The Academic Staff Union of Universities has said it will  suspend its ongoing strike  when the four months salaries owed its members are paid. The union also wants the immediate implementation of the N1.2tn offer by the Federal Government to public universities, starting with the release of N100bn this year. The balance of N1.1tn is to be spread over five years from 2014.

These were some of the resolutions reached by members of the National Executive Council of the union who converged on Kano on Friday to deliberate on whether to call off the over four- month-old industrial action or not. A source, who was privy to the resolutions  reached during the President Goodluck Jonathan – ASUU leadership meeting three weeks ago, said that  the fresh demands were some of the issues to be tabled before Jonathan by  the leadership  during their next meeting. A date for the meeting is yet to be fixed.

THE BATTLE BETWEEN DUCHESS OF CAMBRIDGE AND THE WIND

There is a time and a place for a ‘Marilyn moment’. But it’s certainly not when you’re a member of the Royal Family trying to look dignified in front of the assembled media.

The Duchess of Cambridge made headlines for all the wrong reasons this week when a rogue gust of wind blew up her pleated skirt as she arrived at a children’s charity event. It is not the first time the Duchess’s hemlines have caused her trouble. It happened twice on her first official visit to Canada, where she all but flashed a glimpse of her underwear at Calgary airport after her Jenny Packham dress made a bid for freedom.

SEXUAL OFFENCES BILL

The Senate has acted responsibly by taking a step further towards making legislation that is focused on checking sexual offences in Nigeria.

We welcome the support senators gave the Sexual Offences Bill when it was presented for second reading at the Senate. Coming at a time when sexual crimes are rapidly increasing, the successful outing of the bill gives hope that our lawmakers are sensitive to the safety, security, and well-being of Nigerians, especially women and children who suffer the most sexual offences.
