SCARY MOMENT A BULL LEAPT OVER A FENCE AT MEXICO CITY'S FAMOUS BULLRING

The crowd gasped in horror as an enormous bull weighing more than half a tonne pounced over barrier the separates the crowd from the ring in Mexico City.

Mexican bullfighter Eulalio Lopez was in action with the bull known as Cuadrillero, when it suddenly went berserk careering over the fence. One person had to be taken to hospital as the beast struggled to escape.
Matadors that were waiting to take part were sitting in the area where the bull landed and were left scrambling for their lives when the half-tonne bull jumped the ring-side barrier.

As the bull entered the ring it appeared to gallop straight for the fence. As onlookers scatter, the animal managed to get a second boost by pushing off the red barrier before finally crashing into a second tier of seating in the Mexican ring.

Mexico City's bullring was built 60 years ago and is one of the biggest in the world, with a capacity of 42,000. The controversial spectacle, in which bulls are baited in a ring for entertainment, took place in La Monumental bullring stadium in Mexico City. Three years ago, the animal rights lobby proposed a ban on bullfighting in the capital.

The anti-bullfighting arguments in Mexico are much the same as in other countries where they are still held - that the practice is barbaric, out-dated and has no place in a modern, forward-looking society.

Following a similar move in Catalonia in Spain and recent restrictions on the controversial practice in several Latin American countries, including Ecuador and Peru, Mexican activists were at one point confident a ban would come into force, but that has yet to materialize.
