The skeletal remains of a woman were found a week ago in the woods in Dedham, Boston USA. On Monday, investigators identified her as Susan Anyanwu-Corbin.
At a press conference, Norfolk District Attorney Michael Morrissey said, “This does not mark the end of the investigation but, really, it’s more like a more difficult beginning.”
Who was Susan Anyanwu-Corbin?
Anyanwu-Corbin was a 22-year-old Nigerian immigrant who was described as outgoing and caring, with aspirations of working in a medical lab or becoming a nurse. “She was like a big sister, a big cousin, looking out for the young ones at all time,” said a family spokesman who declined to give his name.
When did she disappear?
Her boyfriend at the time of her disappearance, Junior Bernard, said Anyanwu-Corbin went missing a few days after he filed a police report in February 2016 in which he alleged she had been assaulted by a former boyfriend. Bernard said the former boyfriend had been harassing both of them for several weeks and vowed, “I will be back.”
An uncle reported her disappearance on May 8, 2016.
Why did it take so long for her disappearance to be reported?
The family spokesman said relatives thought she was “laying low, trying to be on her own,” while dealing with “challenges” in her life.
Bones and a few personal effects were found in the woods off High Street on city property last week. Police released photos of a sweatshirt worn by the woman and some jewelry in hopes of identifying her last Friday.
Investigators said a person recognized the jewelry in media coverage and helped identify the woman. The medical examiner in Boston confirmed Anyanwu-Corbin's identity based on dental records.
Boston Adult Technical Academy (BATA) Headmaster Benjamin Helfat issued the following statement on the loss of Susan Anyanwu Corbin.
"Susan was popular and enthusiastic, and she always had a warm presence in our school. She was insightful and generous in her contributions to class discussions. Susan was a resilient and determined student despite her life obstacles. She will be missed. Everyone in our school community passes along their condolences to Susan's friends and family as the cope with this tragic loss."
