REVENGE RAPE OF A 14-YR-OLD GIRL IN INDIA. #SayNoToRAPE

When a 14-year-old girl was pulled from her home, dragged to a nearby forest and raped, police revealed the assault was ordered by the head of her village in India.

The horrific case, which took place last week, has once again shed light on local councils, called panchayats, which wield significant power in rural villages throughout India and can dole out punishment with impunity.

The incident occurred after the girl's brother was accused of attempting to rape a married woman, according to police. The village council met and directed the aggrieved woman's husband, identified as Nakabandi Passi, to rape the accused assailant's young sister in retaliation, police said.

THE CIRCLE - LAWYERS, JUDGES AND CORRUPTION.

Chief Justice, Mariam Aloma Mukhtar, pushed her anti-corruption efforts a notch higher, the other day, when she sought to identify forces fostering illicit activities in the judiciary. According to the CJN, lawyers, particularly Senior Advocates of Nigeria (SAN), working in tandem with corrupt judges are equally corrupt.

And her point basically that there are no corrupt judges without corrupt lawyers is incontrovertible. If the Bench stinks of corruption, the Bar may stink even more, a situation that poses grave danger to the entire legal profession and dispensation of justice. Considering the notion that the judiciary is the last hope, the only avenue for the ordinary citizen seeking justice and fairness if all else fails, the CJN’s assertions should be worrisome to all Nigerians.

THE CRAZE ABOUT "CREATION OF NEW STATES"

It appears some Nigerians would only be satisfied if each family gets a State. Even then, husband and wife may not agree on who becomes the governor of their State. Things are that ridiculous.

The recommendation of the National Conference that 18 new States be created is not for the well-being of Nigerians. How did the National Conference arrive at its decision? What contributions would 18 new States make to the development of Nigeria? Did the conference contemplate the implications of 18 new governors, 18 new State Assemblies, 18 new judiciary, with the other attendant bureaucracies?

We have passed the stage where new States would develop Nigeria. For years, new States have added to the national burden by diluting resources that would have been used in more productive areas.

The leader of the Boko Haram terrorist group, Abubakar Shekau, has vowed not to release more than 200 Chibok schoolgirls in his group's captivity. Shekau is saying the sect will only accede to the #BringBackOurGirls campaign after the release of Boko Haram militants held by the Nigerian government.

Mr. Shekau made the demand in a new video published Sunday, where the Islamist leader restated a position he had maintained since the abduction of the girls by Boko Haram militants April 14.

IMPEACHMENT SAGA - PANEL INDICTS GOV. NYAKO

There were indications last night that the panel raised by the Adamawa State House of Assembly to probe the allegations of misappropriation of funds had indicted the state governor, Murtala Nyako. Also, the panel might have cleared his deputy, Bala James Ngilari. The panel is expected to submit its report to the state House of Assembly today.

It was also gathered that the embattled governor was already considering defecting to the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, as that remained the only option to escape the impeachment noose hanging on his neck. Erstwhile governor of Borno State, Senator Ali Modu Sheriff,  had defected to the PDP and is set to storm Maiduguri, the state capital for a briefing with his supporters today.

A top government official, who is privy to the work of the seven-man panel, confided in Vanguard that the report concluded that Nyako was guilty and should be removed but did not indict Ngilari.
